Researcher and DJ Mike Smaczylo explores what the struggles of DIY nightlife and co-operative venues tell us about contemporary club culture, and why these spaces need to be supported.

The full essay reflects on a history of heavy handed policing and draconian legislation targeting rave culture, and the impact of co-op venues past and present — including Glasgow’s Bonjour, Manchester’s Partisan Collective, Leeds’ Wharf Chambers and Sheffield's Gut Level — for carrying the flame of that countercultural spirit.
