This week on Saturday! Ticket in bio 🍀

Outer Space is an interdisciplinary festival, where themes as nature, music, culture and food (production) are connecting factors for and by people from various affiliated communities. It is an experience of symmathesy as Nora Bateson calls it. The ‘learning together’ of people, nature and culture, in a space of mutual dependence.

The name “Outer Space” indicates leaving the beaten path, creating new space for your senses, and experiencing the world in a different way. It is an invitation to discover the richness of a new environment. The message that is lying underneath is that we must find new paths towards a future that is about balance, rather than endless growth.

Organised by Roots & Remedies / Voedselpark Amsterdam / Slow Food Amsterdam / Amped / Grounded Community / Greenius and Space is the Place

Also participating are MijnStadstuin, Het Natuurtalent, Voedselbos Amsterdam, Saunakaravaan, Food Council MRA, De Sering & Oedipus.

Herewith the first video by Ingoma Yesintu, featuring the songs Umoya / One / Bags of Light as a compilation. We want to thank Music Meeting in Nijmegen for the space they gave Zenzele and the crew last Sunday. We hope for many more bright shows in the future!

Ingoma Yesintu—meaning Song of Humanity or Folk Song in isiZulu—is led by bassist-composer Zenzele Mthembu-Salter, who writes and arranges the music of this acapella ensemble with a firm focus on voices. With subtlety and grace, it features six singers, double bass, and percussion, centering on vocal harmonies with South African grooves and rhythms. The choir is made up of talented locally based Conservatorium vocalists from all across the world, drawing inspiration from African gospel choirs, classical chorales, traditional chants, jazz, and free improvisation.

🌱 Join us June 28 for Outer Space: a music, nature, food and sauna gathering in the Nieuw-West countryside!

Musicians are invited to interact with the nature around them, the surroundings, the present sounds. Most musicians play acoustically and unamplified. Just like the music, the food is synchronized with the environment. Think of flavors that cherish the stories of the food forest, the herb gardens and the city gardens. It is a space to move to the rhythm of taste, sound and the feel of the earth beneath your feet. A culinary experience that connects you more deeply to the place where you are.

The day including some lectures, tours across the area & the food forest and intimate performances!

Tomorrow! Together with a vibrant community of local impro musicians, fans, organizers, and enthusiasts, we’re excited to launch a new initiative: LOKAAL.

Taking place regularly at the beautiful Dokzaal, LOKAAL is our way of rekindling the spirit and love that years of concerts at De Ruimte—including the beloved Space Impro—brought to life. We aim to fill a gap that De Ruimte's closing left in the city. In the spirit of collaboration and continuity, and alongside kindred peoples you recognize from De Ruimte, MOLK Factory, and more, we warmly invite you to join us for the very first edition on Friday, May 16th!

19 May 💫 Exciting to be back once again with our Monday concept jumping across styles and disciplines, An Intergalactic Night, as always at BIMHUIS! This edition features the duo Pierre Bastien / Bruno Ferro Xavier da Silva, Joy Guidry, and Ping En Hung; plus Chaerin Im as bar pianist.

🪀 Pierre Bastien builds his own machineries at the cross between music and visual art, blending live trumpet sounds with screen projections and mechanical sound sculptures in a very poetic way. He will perform with visual artist and bass guitarist Bruno Ferro Xavier Da Silva, who plays rhythmically as well as melodically, using a battery of effects to create the most bizarre sounds.

🎸 In her musical endeavors, Ping-En Hung aims to connect with people profoundly, touching the inner recesses of their emotions. Chinese philosophy holds a special place in her heart and she draws inspiration from film and dance. In her solo performances she fuses bass guitar and electronics, alternating improvisations with compositions and soundscapes. Ping-En Hung is from Taipei and is currently living in Amsterdam.

🪈 Joy Guidry is a bassoonist, versatile improviser, performance artist, and composer of experimental, daring new works that embody a deep love of storytelling. Joy’s music channels her inner child in honor of their ancestors and predecessors. She performed at renowned stages and festivals, as well as art museums and biennales. She has been commissioned by the JACK Quartet, among others.

🎹 In a relatively short time, South-Korean pianist Chaerin Im has earned her place in Dutch jazz, collaborating with the likes of Ben van Gelder, Reinier Baas, Ernst Reijseger and Sun-Mi Hong. As a band leader she won the Keep An Eye International Jazz Award in 2024 and was selected shortly thereafter as a Young Artist of the Year by Dutch newspaper NRC.

Monday eve 28 April! With spring in full bloom, Amsterdam’s organizations The Rest is Noise, which champions forward-thinking and outspoken music nights, and Space is the Place, acclaimed for its focus on catalyzing and nurturing the free improvisation scene, collaborate for the first time on this night that fuses their respective and overlapping visions. While the former focuses more on avant-garde electronic music and the latter more on jazz and contemporary music, they similarly strive for experimentation and boundary-pushing sound in their programming. Both local initiatives often organize in this building of Muziekgebouw and BIMHUIS and have a devoted love for the city in which they reside.

On the bill tonight: vocalist and cellist Sanem Kalfa with cellist Lucija Gregov, guitarist and singer Ahmed Ag Kaedy with drummer and percussionist Will Guthrie, and saxophonist and composer Sakina Abdou!

SANEM KALFA / LUCIJA GREGOV
Sanem Kalfa and Lucija Gregov play together as a duo–both wizards of the cello–in a delicate yet fractious chamber music conversation. Their dynamic ways of acoustic experimentation complement each other in an emotive, swaying vortex. Sanem’s haunting voice adds a third layer as she plays her cello, and Lucija fills the notes with wondrous manipulations on the same instrument.

AHMED AG KAEDY / WILL GUTHRIE
Tuareg musician Ahmed Ag Kaedy and Australian drummer Will Guthrie join forces tonight. This February, they are releasing Tidawt, their first collaborative tape, recorded in Umeå last year. The silencing guitar- and vocal-led sounds of Ag Kaedy, combined with the thrilling drum play of Guthrie, create an interplay where their diverse musical languages connect seamlessly.

SAKINA ABDOU
Sakina Abdou plays solo tonight, showcasing her note-sweeping sax play, whose style brings imagery of notes dancing and darting through thin air. She is a French saxophonist and composer known for a bold, expressive approach to contemporary and improvised music. She pushes the boundaries of jazz, free improvisation, and experimental sound, carving a distinct voice that blends intensity with subtlety.

Dear friends, family, fans!

We're launching our Friends of SITP campaign through which you can support Space is the Place and help us bring concerts and projects to life.

Space is the Place creates space for both emerging and established musicians in a world where electronics blend with acoustics, jazz meets contemporary, and dance invites introspection—all driven by a shared passion for music in the moment.

By doing so, we support artists locally and beyond, encouraging them to cross disciplines, experiment with new collaborations, and take creative risks on stage.

Funding alone isn’t enough—we need our friends to keep pushing Amsterdam’s improv scene forward.

Donate €8, €10, €12, or €20 per month (minimum 3 months) ✨

Some of the faces you'll see during our first event next week! Two generations of Amsterdam’s creative energy, coming together—an example of what Space is the Place truly means. Not just music, but improvisation and the ways artists approach their craft.
A gathering of artists who push beyond jazz, both culturally and artistically.

Seen through the celebratory yet critiquing lens of Mestizx (Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti and Frank Rosaly, joined by James McClure, Ben Boye, and Uldis Vitols) and reflected in the collaborative, international approach of Beatrice Sberna, Gabriel de Oliveira, and friends (Federico Calcagno, Alessandro Fongaro, and Michael Vatcher). A spirit further echoed in Keep It Moving’s translocal, community-driven ethos—bringing together a wide range of creatives: edós & RRRADIANT, Remembering Love, DJ Andy Ex, Shiru, and c00.
The latter are figures also embedded in the more electronic scenes, a space that the Aquarius Zen Garden project embodies—a second act by Ibelisse on the night, featuring Jochem van Tol and Jacob Maskell-Key.

So, mark your calendars for a new instalment of the always pleasantly disturbing An Interplanetary Night. The first in our spring series—come join!

Our Story

SITP (SPACE IS THE PLACE)

Since 2015 Space is the Place organizes a progressive and adventurous concert series. With De Ruimte (Amsterdam) as a home base, Space is the Place curated over 600 concerts with a focus on jazz and improvised music. We initiate concert evenings and at the same time try to form a creative breeding ground stimulating the scene, also by crossing genres and disciplines.

In 2017 Foundation Space is the Place was born. The official goal according the statutes: organizing improvised music based concerts in which sounds the necessity and pleasure of adventurous music.
