Friday 31 July: THE BIRDCAGE screens at Melkweg. One of the funniest films ever made about family, drag and staying true to yourself.
Robin Williams and Nathan Lane run South Beach’s hottest drag club. When their son brings home his fiancée’s ultra-conservative parents (Gene Hackman and Dianne Wiest) for dinner, they have one night to play it straight. It does not go to plan.
Before the film, film journalist Nico van den Berg opens the night with an in-depth talk on the film’s background and its cultural context: a straight actor (Robin Williams) playing one of cinema’s most iconic gay roles, then and now.
