The day I will never forget in a hurry😭😭

Let me tell you about one of those days in my baking business that taught me a very important lesson.

A client discovered Joy’s Bakes N Treats on Facebook and decided to place an order with us. I was genuinely excited because a new client had found us online and trusted us enough to order. ❤️

Fast-forward to the delivery day…

My dispatch rider came to pick up the cake. Everything looked perfect, and he was ready to leave.

But just as he was about to leave, something strange happened.

For some reason, a thought kept running through my mind:

“Are you sure this cake won’t scatter?” 😭

And honestly, that thought had never crossed my mind before.

I had been using this same rider to deliver cakes for a long time, so I couldn’t understand why I suddenly felt uneasy that particular day.

I checked the price of a Bolt ride, but it was quite expensive, so I decided to go with the bike delivery instead.

My rider left.

Not long after, I noticed several missed calls from him.

I thought to myself, “Oh, he probably wants to tell me that the cake has been delivered successfully.”

I called him back.

And the next thing I heard was:

“Ma, the cake has scattered.” 😭😭😭

My heart literally skipped.

I was shocked, angry, and honestly, I almost cried.

I asked him, “How did this happen?”

He explained that the bad road had caused the cake to scatter.

At that point, I was just thinking, “God, what am I going to tell this client?” 😭

I asked if he could bring the cake back to the bakery so I could fix it.

But he told me he had already delivered it to the client.

My heart sank. 🥲

Then, not long after, my client started calling.

And honestly, I was scared to pick up.

I thought he was going to be angry or scold me, and to be honest, I would have completely understood if he was.

I picked up the call and immediately started apologizing and pleading with him.

But surprisingly…

He didn’t get angry.

He simply told me:

“Don’t worry, it’s okay.”

Guys, the relief I felt at that moment… 🥲❤️

I was so grateful for his understanding because, if I were in his shoes, I honestly don’t know if I would have reacted that calmly.

And then, to make everything even better, he later gave us a wonderful review about the taste of the cake. 🥹❤️

After all the anxiety, that review made me genuinely happy.

This experience taught me something I will never forget:

Business will not always be rosy.

There will be days when everything goes perfectly, and there will also be days when things happen that are completely beyond your control.

What matters is how you handle those difficult moments.

So, to every small business owner out there, don’t be discouraged when you have a bad day.

The bad days are part of the journey too.

Today, it’s a cake that scattered.

Tomorrow, it could be a lesson that makes you a better business owner.❤️

WHY I STARTED COLLECTING FULL PAYMENT BEFORE STARTING A JOB 😭😂

When I started my baking business, orders were not coming 😭. I was still trying to build my customer base.

Then one day, a lady who lived close to my street ordered a cake for her son. The cake was ₦17,000, and she transferred ₦10,000 as part payment.

I clearly told her, “Ma, you’ll have to complete the balance before delivery.” She agreed.

Fast forward to the day before delivery…

I called her to remind her about the ₦7,000 balance. She said, “Don’t worry, when you bring the cake, I’ll give you the money in cash.”

Okay o… since she was my neighbor, I trusted her.

Delivery day came. 🥲

I got to her house, handed over the beautiful cake and politely asked for my balance.

That was when the story started. 😂😭

She said the person she sent to withdraw the money had not returned.

I said, “No problem, you can transfer it instead.”

Suddenly… BANK ISSUES! 😭😂

I went home, telling myself, “She’s my neighbor. I’ll get my money.”

I kept asking for that ₦7,000.

Every time I asked, there was a new episode, new explanation, new story. 😭😂

One month passed…
Two months passed…
We were approaching the third month!

Eventually, I told myself, that I wasn’t going to ask her for the money again until she gives it to me, to avoid both of us having a serious argument.
Till today, that Lady is still owing me 7,000😭

And honestly, that experience taught me a very important lesson about running a business.

So now, when a client places an order and pays part payment, the balance must be completed before the order leaves my hands. No matter how close we are, no matter how convincing the story sounds. 😂

It’s not because I don’t trust my clients. It’s because I’ve learnt to protect my business, my time, my ingredients and my hard work. ❤️

So, dear valid clients of Joy’s Bakes N Treats, please understand the policy.

We love serving you, we appreciate your patronage, and our ultimate motive is simply to serve you better and give you the best every time.❤️
