PASSING CHORD
WHAT IS PASSING A CHORD?
A passing chord is a chord you play in between two main chords to make the movement sound smoother, richer, and more interesting.
Think of it like a “bridge” connecting one chord to another.
For example:
If you are moving from:
C → F
You can add a passing chord in between, like:
C → G/B → F
The G/B is the passing chord because it helps the transition flow smoothly.
Why Passing Chords Are Important
* They make your playing sound professional
* They add emotion and movement
* They reduce “empty” chord changes
* They are common in gospel, jazz, R&B, and worship music
Simple Example in Key of C
Main progression:
C → Am → F → G
With passing chords:
C → E7 → Am → Dm → G → C
Here:
* E7 passes into Am
* Dm helps lead into G
