I used 25% of my 13th month salary in 2024 to buy my boss a gift (hamper). In less than a year, he sponsored my event and we became partners.
Someone asked me: “As a creative in the industry, how can I grow quickly in the corporate space?”
Here’s what most people won’t tell you:
Your talent gets you in the room. But strategic relationships get you to the table.
Last December, while everyone was collecting groundnut oil and rice from the company, I did something different. I gathered part of my 13th month salary, bought a hamper, and gave it to my CEO.
He acted like he didn’t care. But he did.
That one move unlocked three things:
1. ACCESS
I wasn’t just another employee anymore. I became someone he paid attention to.
2. RESPECT
He saw I wasn’t just working for a paycheck - I was thinking about relationships and long-term value.
3. PARTNERSHIP
Within a year, he didn’t just sponsor my event - we became business partners.
The Lesson:
Growing quickly in corporate isn’t about:
* Working longer hours
* Being the most talented
* Waiting for your turn
It’s about thinking differently about relationships.
While others see their salary as spending money, see it as investment capital.
While others wait for opportunities, create access.
While others see a boss, see a potential partner.
You’re not buying favour. You’re investing in relationships that your skills alone can’t build.
What’s one strategic move you can make this season that changes how you’re positioned?
