When you’re standing in a beautiful field or a lush garden, it’s easy to get swept up in the romance and miss the "infrastructure" red flags.
Here is your Outdoor Venue "Red Flag" Checklist to bring to your next walkthrough.

🚩 The Outdoor Venue "Red Flag" Checklist

🏗️ Infrastructure & Power
[ ] The "Silent" Test: Stand at the altar spot for 3 full minutes. Do you hear a nearby highway, a neighbor’s barking dog, or a hum from a generator?

[ ] Power Sources: Are there outdoor outlets near the ceremony site, or will the DJ have to run 200 feet of bright orange extension cords (an aesthetic nightmare)?

[ ] The Restroom Trek: Walk from the ceremony site to the nearest bathroom. Is it a 5-minute hike uphill? If so, you’ll need to budget for luxury portable trailers.

☀️ Light & Landscape
[ ] The Squint Factor: Using a compass app, check where the sun will be at your ceremony time. If it's directly behind the officiant, your guests will see a blinding silhouette and no faces.

[ ] Shadow Patterns: Are there large trees that will create "dappled" light on your faces? (This can make wedding photos look "patchy" or "polka-dotted.")

[ ] Drainage Check: Look for low spots in the grass. If it rained two days ago and the ground is still spongy, one storm on your wedding day will create a mud pit.

🛋️ Logistics & Accessibility
[ ] The "Grandma" Path: Is the path to the seating area gravel, steep, or uneven? If a guest uses a walker or wheelchair, can they get there with dignity?

[ ] Wind Tunnels: Does the venue act as a funnel for wind? (Check for leaning trees or wind-blown debris). High wind ruins hairstyles and tips over tall floral centerpieces.

[ ] The "Backstage": Where do the caterers set up? You don't want the "clinking" of prep dishes or the smell of trash cans drifting over your vows.

Peer-to-Peer Advice: Don't be afraid to ask the venue coordinator, "Where did the last wedding here go wrong?" Their answer will tell you exactly what to prep for.

Choosing your wedding colours is not “pick pink because it’s cute” or “my friend used emerald so let’s use emerald too.” 😭 Please. This is not copy & paste season.

Your wedding concept is the vibe before the vows. It’s the personality of your big day. It’s what makes guests walk in and go, “Ohhhh this is so THEM.”

Now let’s get into it 👇🏽

✨ 1. Your love story > trending colours
Just because burnt orange is trending on TikTok doesn’t mean it’s your destiny. Are you soft & romantic? Go for blush, champagne, ivory.
Are you bold & dramatic? Black, gold, deep wine will EAT.
Are you outdoorsy, earthy, calm? Sage, terracotta, n**e tones will hug the space beautifully.

Trends expire. Your pictures won’t.

✨ 2. Consider your venue before you fall in love
That garden venue will fight back if you bring neon blue.
That luxury ballroom will look confused if you bring picnic-core.

Your venue and your colours should be in a healthy relationship, not arguing on your wedding day.

✨ 3. Think about your skin tones (yes, I said it)
Your bridesmaids will thank you. Your husband will thank you. Your in-laws might not say it, but they’ll thank you too 😌
Pick colours that complement you both — especially in photos.

✨ 4. Decide your concept before decor shopping
Luxury glam? Minimal chic? Royal traditional? Modern editorial?
Once the concept is clear, every decision becomes easier — outfits, invites, florals, lighting, even your cake design.

Confused couples spend more money because they keep changing their minds. Focused couples? Calm, classy, coordinated.

✨ 5. Please don’t use 17 colours

This is a wedding, not a crayon box.
Pick 2–3 main colours and 1 accent. Let the accent be the spice, not the whole soup.
