BREAKING NEWS.......😞 😢 😭

37 DETAINEES DIE IN NSCDC CUSTODY — NIGER STATE .

Thirty-seven people detained during an illegal-mining crackdown in Niger State have died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. Protests subsequently erupted in Minna, prompting an overnight curfew after clashes with security forces. The exact cause of the detainees’ deaths has not yet been established. President Bola Tinubu has ordered an investigation, while the Niger State NSCDC commandant has been suspended.

The fundamental question is simple: How did 37 Nigerians enter government custody alive and end up dead?

Whether they were suspected of illegal mining is beside the point. Arrest is not a death sentence. An independent investigation should establish the cause of every death, the conditions in which the detainees were held, who was responsible for their welfare, and whether any criminal or administrative wrongdoing occurred.

And where wrongdoing is established, accountability should go beyond suspension.

Government custody comes with a duty to protect life. Nigerians deserve the complete truth about what happened in Minna.
