Why must we always be the ones adjusting to agony and suffering?
Why must citizens continue to bear the consequences of poor leadership and incompetence?
Why are struggling, innocent, unprotected, and vulnerable people the major targets of kidnappers and violent criminals?
Why are the politicians destroying the hopes and future of the people not the primary targets of these cold-blooded killers?
So many questions arise at once, and they all point to a painful reality—that the people entrusted with protecting us may be the very ones trading away our peace and safety. It often feels as though ordinary citizens are seen as insignificant in the eyes of these heartless people.
One thing about us is that fear has weakened our voices, and those in power know it. We are afraid of pain, afraid of death, yet in many ways we have been dying slowly for years. Because how else do we explain a society constantly experiencing terror after terror, while all we do is make headlines out of tragedy and gradually normalize it? We suffer, we complain, and then we move on.
Perhaps the greatest damage this cycle has caused is the loss of accountability in our society. If we were truly accountable people at heart, we would not continue to tolerate unaccountability from those in leadership. Many families are grieving deeply because of these tragic events, and tomorrow it could be another family. Must it happen closer to home before more people speak up or demand change? We are living in deeply troubling times.
