One of the highlights of writing this piece for The New Yorker was the incredible privilege of making contact with an underrated Nigerian artist and poet in the person of Mrs. Foluso Ogunjimi, who was Alaga Ijoko at my wedding 19 years ago. She gave an allegory on the pineapple that stayed with me for that length of time. The brilliance of her wit can only be appreciated in sitting through a traditional wedding and watching her work. I was sad The New Yorker didn't have the word allowance to quote the whole allegory but I have asked her permission to post a transliteration of it: "A bride is like a perfectly formed pineapple from hundreds of fused blooms. At the end of nature's fluent innovation only one fruit ascends, sitting poised on a sturdy arm, crowned with an extravagant head-tie. A parent plant never produces two pineapples. It has never happened. This is why a woman never tolerates...was never built for...competition, comparison, harem-existence; appalling living conditions, aberrations of nature and love.
