Sanyan: An Asooke Product with Different Identity

Sanyan is one of the 3 principal asooke of the olden days. It's a design that's believed to be used by the people of high rank in the community in the olden days.

Sanyan is characterized by the combination of two colours - Carton colour and White colour - in desired proportion. However, white has always been stripe(s) while the carton has always been the background.

It's also worthy to know that Sanyan has always been Cotton (a form of asooke) and that depicts its traditional richness.

Sanyan and its cultural diversification:

Sanyan symbolises different cultural festivities in different cities in Nigeria.

Taking for example;

In Ilorin, Kwara State, if you see a picture of a man and/or woman on Sanyan dress, it means just 1 thing. And that's what? Wedding! Sanyan in Ilorin exemplifies Wedding, Nikkah or Walimah. These 3 occasions can be put under Wedding.

In Ondo (or a part of the state) and some other Yoruba speaking cities, Sanyan symbolises Burial. It's a dress they use to send the deceased to the afterlife. I have once had a discussion with a ma'am who is an asooke vendor. She was surprised to know that the product is a symbol of Wedding in Ilorin because she's known it to be used for Burial.

Furthermore, this particular product (Sanyan) exemplifies high chiefs, kingship and royalty in some other part of the Yoruba speaking environment.

In conclusion, it's necessary to understand that Sanyan can be personally used as well without having any affiliation to the mentioned examples.

NB: Sanyan is generally believe to be the "Father" of all clothes in Yoruba culture.

One of the challenges asooke vendors face is the "COLOUR IDENTIFICATION".

Colour is very important as other aspects of asooke.

Take for instance;

In the pictures attached to this post are 3 different colours (members) of Gold family.

We have;

✓ The Real Gold
✓ The Champagne Gold
✓ The Rose Gold

All these colours are distinctly different and can be confusing to only inexperienced asooke vendors.

What I ordered VS what delivered

Ms. Omome, like my other customers, messaged me on a faithful day on WhatsApp and we have our discussion which led to deals.

Ms. Omome has chosen me as her weaver for all her functions.

After our first work together, she expressed her satisfaction of what I did. I remembered I asked her for referral if the opportunity comes.

Earlier this month, she told me her sister will be needing asooke (woven fabric) and she has recommended me. I was so happy 😊 .

On the following day, her sister messaged me and requested for some samples which she can choose from. I sent 3 samples and the Burgundy and Gold combo (picture 1) was chosen. We agreed on price and she paid.

I started the work and neatly weave it.

The sample and what I delivered were the same (picture 2).

When I through with the weaving, I packaged it and prepare it for delivery (picture 3).

I see fulfilment in what I do. Weaving gives me joy.

Dear Prospective Asooke Vendors,

The time is now.

Ada and Olufunke are friends and they're both into selling aso-ebi including asooke.

They're both selling online. Both of them have physical shop.

Ada sells faster. In fact, Ada will sell about 6× (six times) than Olufunke.

Olufunke has always wondered "why?".

The basis of the product is normal plain (picture 1). However, since the introduction of winding shinny (radiant yarn) with wool to weave, the name SHANAWOLE comes to the existence.

The shinny look beautifies the product more. It adds more to the creativity.

My recently woven asooke (woven fabric) for a year old boy, TIV (a tribe in Nigeria) design. Because TIV is said to predominantly live in Benue, this design is also called Benue attire.

A man drove to my working place at Kankatu to see me. We had had a deal before. I wove the asooke for his first son's birthday.

Before coming, he's been trying to reach me but all effort to reach me prove abortive.

When he came, he met with my brother and after his description. I was called for him by my brother. After checking the number, the last 4 digits were mis-arranged. So the reason he couldn't reach me.

A sample was shown to me. He paid and I asked him to come 2 days after.

TIV attire is lovely and cool. It's a combo of BLACK and WHITE.

I did a good work in the first time and that's why he tried hard to see me for the second time.

I pray he comes soon for a big gig 🙂

I made it, well. I designed it from the beginning in a way that the boy will not be too heated in this weather. Even my friend used his hands to feel the texture and he confirmed the softness.

One of the factors that have given me respect to my mentees and positioning me as one of the bests to anyone that come to me for inquiries is KNOWLEDGE and EXPERTISE.

I repeat. My customers always appreciate my knowledge during consultations.

I can confidently tell you that prospects, especially the Owambe Rockers will not choose you as their main asooke provider once they're aware that you lack the knowledge of asooke.

Even if you have the opportunity of great circle (NETWORK), building trust would be easier when you're a skilled vendor.

After thoughtful consideration, I want to build a community of 50 asooke vendors (maximum). This is at a subsidized price.

I'll train them. My community members will have access to asooke pictures. I mean pictures that are free of copyright issues. They'll have free access to me for consultation. I'll hold your hand while growing as vendors. Constant tips and ideas.

Yesterday, I shared a story about customer's "send me pictures" and "send me samples" syndrome and I promised to share the lessons I learned from the experience.

As a vendor, WhatsApp Business shouldn't be news to you anymore. Now, let's discuss how you can use some of its features to your advantage.

WhatsApp Business has Catalogue section where you can place your products - images, name, price and description. Anytime such customers reach out to you, you can always refer them to your catalogue or get the link and forward to them. I have been using this for a while and it's working well.

Also, let me teach you how can effectively use WhatsApp Business Catalogue and Google Drive to avoid sending pictures to every single person in your inbox.

Go to Google drive and create different folders with the name of each product. Upload all the pictures related to each product to the respective folders. Copy the link of a folder. Then, launch your WhatsApp Business and go to catalogue section, give your product a name, give the price, add images and compose short description. In the description, direct them to check further using the Google drive link to the folder that has all the pictures of the particular products.

Giving the illustration.

I have different products and they're named A, B and C.

On Google drive - I'll open folder A, upload all shareable pictures of products A. I'll open folder B, upload all shareable pictures of products B. I'll open folder C, upload all shareable pictures of products C.

On WhatsApp Business - I'll create section for product A on catalogue and upload 3 - 4 images of product A, give the price and write description. You'd have copied the link to product A folder on Google drive, then put in the description of product A on WhatsApp Business catalogue.

Repeat the process for product B and C.

You can even lock access to your Google drive. Thus, your permission will be required before the person can have access to the folder.
