🧵✨ FULL SEWING ANALYSIS OF THE DRESS
The dress has two main parts:
1. The Bodice (Top)
Made from a lace fabric with a pronounced floral pattern.
Fully lined.
Has puffed 3/4 sleeves gathered at the lower arm.
Round neckline.
Closes at the back (likely zipper, though not visible).
2. The Skirt
Full, gathered ball-gown style.
Made from soft tulle/net with lining underneath.
Attached to the bodice with a wide waist band made from plain fabric matching the bodices
🧶 FABRIC REQUIREMENTS
For a toddler (approx age 2–4):
Lace fabric: 1 yard
Plain satin/duchesse / tafetta (for waist band + bodice lining): 1 yard
Soft tulle/net: 3–4 yards (for a full, puffy skirt)
Satin lining for skirt: 1 yard
Zipper: 10–14 inches
Bias tape: optional for finishing edges
PATTERN DRAFTING
BODICE FRONT AND BACK
Use a basic child bodice block:
Neck depth: 2.5–3 inches (front), 1–1.5 inches (back)
Shoulder: standard measurement
Armhole: moderate curve
Bodice length: short, ending above the tummy because the waist band adds extra length.
Add ½ inch seam allowance around.
SLEEVES
The sleeves are the standout feature.
Style: Puffy at the top and also puffy at the hem.
Drafting:
1. Use a basic short sleeve block.
2. Add:
1.5–2 inches height above the sleeve cap (for puffiness).
2–3 inches width on both sides for fullness.
3. Sleeve length: 3/4 length.
4. For the hem puff, cut the hem much wider and gather it at the end.
WAISTBAND
Width (finished): about 3–4 inches.
Length: child’s waist measurement + 1 inch seam allowance.
Cut:
1 piece in satin/tafetta
1 piece in interfacing (optional)
1 lining piece
✂️ CUTTING GUIDE
From LACE
Front bodice (1 piece)
Back bodice (2 pieces)
Both sleeves (2 pieces)
From SATIN or PLAIN FABRIC
Bodice lining (front & back)
Waist band (outer & lining)
Skirt lining (big rectangle)
From TULLE
2–4 layers of long rectangles:
Length = desired skirt length
Width = 2.5× to 3× child’s waist
🪡 SEWING CONSTRUCTION PROCESS
1. Sew the Bodice
1. Join front and back lace bodice at shoulders.
2. Repeat for lining.
3. Place lace bodice and lining right sides together, sew around neckline.
4. Turn out and press.
5. Attach sleeves:
Gather sleeve cap for puff.
Sew onto armhole.
6. Gather sleeve hem slightly and finish with a folded band or elastic.
2. Sew the Waistband
1. Sew outer waistband to bodice bottom.
2. Attach waistband lining to inside to hide seam.
3. Press neatly.
3. Sew the Skirt
Skirt Lining
Join into a circular piece.
Gather the top to match the waistband.
Tulle Layers
Join each layer into a loop.
Gather each layer separately.
Stack all layers onto the skirt lining.
Attach to Waistband
Align gathers.
Sew securely to the waistband.
4. Insert the Zipper
Place zipper at the center-back seam.
Make sure lining conceals zipper tape neatly.
5. Finishing
Hem the lining.
Leave the tulle raw (tulle doesn’t fray).
Add any decorations if you want (beads, rhinestones).
