My First Valentine Gift… and How It Went Completely Wrong 😂💔
Let me tell you people what happened the year I was taking JAMB lessons.
In that class, we were only three Igbo-speaking students, and I was the only girl. The other two were boys. One of them became very close to me. We read together after lessons, prepared seriously for JAMB, and spent so much time studying that some people even thought we were twins.
Please note — we had just met in that lesson class o!
So on Valentine’s Day that year, we had class. After the lesson, I was still rounding up my notes when this my friend tapped me and said,
“I guess you’re busy?”
I said yes, because truly I was trying to finish what I was writing. He then told me to check my JAMB preparation book — page 58 specifically. He said he kept something there for me and that I shouldn’t open it until I got home.
In my mind I was like, “Okay ooo…” I didn’t think much of it.
I rushed home after the day’s activities and almost forgot about it completely. It was when I was about to sleep that I suddenly remembered.
Ah! Page 58!
I quickly carried my book and started flipping through the pages. I had even forgotten the exact page, so I was searching and searching until I finally found it.
Inside was an envelope.
I opened it… and what did I see?
A necklace.
Two pairs of earrings.
And a long love letter.
Immediately I started laughing.
“Who is this? What is this? What is all this for?” 😂
Please understand something — at that time, I didn’t even fully understand what Valentine meant. I didn’t wear necklaces. My ears were not pierced. So I was just confused.
Then I opened the letter.
My dear, the English this boy used ehn! I had to bring out my dictionary to understand the vocabulary. The grammar was serious. It was a full romantic love letter.
I just sat there thinking, “What exactly is going on?”
Since the gift was of no use to me, I wrapped everything back neatly. I showed my sisters and we all laughed. They even told me to give the jewelry to them, but I refused. I said, “No, I can’t give out what someone gave to me.”
The next day in class, he was expecting me to be smiling, blushing, maybe extra happy.
But instead, I called him aside and asked,
“What is the meaning of those things you kept in my book?”
He proudly said it was his Valentine gift to me.
I looked at him and said,
“You don’t even really know me. I don’t wear earrings. My ears are not pierced. I don’t wear necklaces. So why all this?”
The shock on his face! 😅
He was surprised. Then he shouted and started laughing. The other friend joined us and we were all laughing. He then told me I could give the gift to any of my friends or sisters.
And that, my people, was how my very first Valentine gift went completely wrong.
Till today, I still laugh whenever I remember it. Life was so innocent then.
Have you ever received a gift that made you confused instead of excited?
