This is relative to the event scope. Do you want to encourage plus ones' or plus tens, do you want to party till dawn (you have to consider the cost of extra drinks and food). Also your guest list, when do you think is the appropriate time for them, do they have kids they need to go back home to or they are stay out and have fun till whenever type....

When planning a birthday party no matter how little it is, it is important to have a theme. This helps with having a direction and guidance to the scope of the event else your planning will be all over the place. It doesn't have to be a *Great Gatsby theme* or *Minnie Mouse*, a simple theme such as *Casual chic* or *Black tie* or *Enchanted forest* ( if you want to go all out) will help put things in perspective.
