On a global scale, energy infrastructure includes the complex networks of power generation, transmission, and distribution systems that deliver electricity, natural gas, and oil to consumers. In Africa, energy infrastructure faces unique challenges due to a combination of limited access, underdeveloped grid systems, and the vast geographical diversity of the continent.

Energy and hydrogen storage are a crucial component for the success and global deployment of this technology. Utilising LNG infrastructure to scale green hydrogen can also be an opportunity to create efficiencies by sharing existing infrastructure. What opportunities exist in Africa? What are other regions implementing? How to overcome the current bottlenecks?

The scale-up of hydrogen production, storage, and supply comes with its own set of risks—both technical and socio-environmental. This session delved into the strategies and technologies being adopted to mitigate these risks, ensuring that the growth of the hydrogen economy in Africa can be achieved safely and sustainably.

Decarbonisation Spotlight: Harnessing Low Carbon Solutions Across Africa’s Key Hard to Abate Industries

Oil & gas, mining, cement, steel and heavy industry presents a significant challenge due to the region's reliance on carbon-intensive processes and lack of infrastructure. Innovative solutions, including renewable energy integration, green hydrogen adoption, and the development of sustainable practices are key to reducing emissions in these sectors. Leveraging technology, such as carbon capture and storage (CCS), and encouraging policy frameworks that incentivise green investments can help facilitate the decarbonisation of these hard to abate sectors.

Attendees heard how the African continent can consolidate its green ambitions and decarbonise key heavy industry sectors so far completely reliant on fossil fuels and evolve to become a market leader.

As the transportation industry faces increasing pressure to reduce carbon emissions and adopt sustainable energy solutions, synthetic fuels, e-fuels and sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) have emerged as promising pathways for decarbonising the global transportation sector. SAF is a particularly exciting innovation in aviation, offering a direct replacement for conventional jet fuel and significantly lowering lifecycle carbon emissions. Together, these technologies have the potential to decarbonise various sectors. However, scaling them up and making them cost-competitive will be key for global adoption. Biomethane and biogas are equally seen as critical components of the global energy opportunity.

The speakers discussed how can leaders in the transportation sector work together to scale up promising solutions in hydrogen and transportation. Attendees gained a deeper understanding of transformative technologies and advancements that will allow the transportation sector to radically transform and offer low carbon alternatives which align with global and African decarbonisation ambitions.

Closing sub-Saharan Africa's massive energy access gap will require substantial investments; around 20 billion USD through 2030, according to the IEA. Asian and European nations are at the forefront of hydrogen technology development, focusing on creating hydrogen solutions through renewable and low carbon energy sources including solar, wind and gas, as well as investing heavily in infrastructure, such as hydrogen fuelling stations and production plants, to create a sustainable hydrogen supply chain. What opportunities exist for furthering Asia and EU’s cooperation with Africa? How can energy security be harmonised across continents?

Asia and Africa will play crucial roles in shaping the future of the hydrogen economy, with a focus on sustainability, innovation, and economic growth. This session explored the strategic hydrogen, green energy and industrialisation plans of key Asian nations including China, South Korea, India and Malaysia and key EU nations including Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and France, whilst assessing market opportunities for a ramp up in production through links between Asia, EU and Africa’s energy value chains.

The next Summit event looked at the ways hydrogen and fertilizers are playing an increasingly important role in the agricultural and energy sectors across Africa. Fertilizers are crucial for improving soil fertility and boosting crop yields, which is vital for food security at a time when the continent faces the dilemma of needing to sustainably feed its rapidly growing population whilst mitigating impacts of climate change to harvests.

Hydrogen is also a crucial chemical and petrochemical raw material, particularly in refining and fertilizer production. Given the high energy intensity of the petrochemical industry, hydrogen could therefore play a key role in the decarbonization of the petrochemical industry if it is cost-competitive and provided from emission-free production processes.

Our esteemed speakers explored how ammonia and fertilizers produced from hydrogen can provides a sustainable and crucial solution on the African continent for the agricultural sector to optimise its productivity and ensure food and crop security, boost livelihoods, and economic growth.
