Opened in 1989, Cinta Sayang Golf & Country Resort was an 18-hole golf course with only 50-rooms chalets back then. Cinta Sayang Resort has successfully pioneered various activities such as Archery, Equestrian and Teambuilding facilities to be incorporated into a resort. We also offer all our guest free use of the fitness centre and swimming pools. Cinta Sayang Resort offers a wide selection of accommodation, with the total of 143 resort rooms and suites which are superbly furnished, providing all the comforts expected of a luxurious 4-star resort with individually designed en-suite bathrooms incorporating a separate shower and bath for the suite rooms, in-room temperature-controlled air conditioning, minibar, satellite television and internet service. Apart from chalets, we also have “terrace homes” in the sky which in comprise with 33 units ideal for families or individual on both short term and long term stay in the form of our 18 storey Sky Residences high-rise unit.

A weekly recap.

The demands on an entry level hospitality employee has remained pretty much the same today, as it was 37+ years ago when I first started. The work life balance still sucks now as it was before, with shift work and working on holidays.The physical demands of a job remains the same if you are in banquet, housekeeping or maintenance, the same hard work as before.

I just had the thought that perhaps the difference is that today, people feel more entitled. I still remember that in the first 4 years that I started my hospitality career in a Singapore hotel back in end 1989, every single one of the guests that I met was polite, kind to the hotel employees, no one asked for any discounts, no fuss made over a wrong orders etc etc. The only weird guest I met in that 4 years, was one regular guest who prefers to receive his room service orders in the n**e 😬

Today, we get scammers, guests who are rude, demanding, or entitled, people who destroys things in rooms etc.

Perhaps the world has gone slightly mad and I don't blame the more talented younger hospitality employees who thinks that a gig job or something they can WFH in another industry, is way better than facing entitled customers on a daily basis.

An elderly couple walked into a McDonald’s and sat down at a table near some young people who were having dinner.

The old man approached the counter and placed an order for one meal. He returned, unwrapped the hamburger, carefully cut it in half, and placed one half in front of his wife. Then he gently counted out the fries and split them evenly between them.

He placed two straws into the soda and set it between them.

The old woman began to eat her half of the burger while the man just watched.

From time to time, he took a small sip of the drink, but he never touched the food.

People around them started to notice and looked on with quiet sympathy.

A young man approached and politely offered to buy them another meal so they wouldn’t have to share.

The woman smiled and said kindly, “Thank you, but we are used to sharing everything.”

Still, the man hadn’t eaten a bite. He simply watched as his wife enjoyed her meal.

The young man returned and offered again.

This time, the old man responded, “Thank you, but we really do share everything.”

The young man paused for a moment, then asked:

“But sir… what are you waiting for??”

The old man smiled and said:

“The teeth.”

Hotels should lead the way to better connect guests with the local neighbourhood and provide a more immersive stay in the area.....and to become a knowledge hub for the travelers.

Many of us in small independent hotels and resorts could use our intimate local knowledge and expertise to provide true connections and insights to their surrounding areas.

Not only that, but this knowledge can also be used as a powerful marketing asset to drive new bookings.

Think about it.....when we talk about “local knowledge hubs” no one knows their patch better than independent hoteliers. While the big box brands may give it's guests a free mobile app to explore the neighbourhood, local hotel managers already have the vital info right there in their heads, on hand for whatever their guests need to know.

The best restaurants within 10 minutes walk… family friendly establishments… vegetarian cafes… how to walk to the museum or cemetary where a historical figure was buried…...the bus to the train station… the reliable local taxi company… the list goes on, and managers in hotels don't need fancy apps.....they are the true local tourist information service with unparalleled knowledge accumulated over many years.

The root of all content marketing is using your knowledge to build and engage an audience and then converting the audience into leads and sales.

In the long run this can become one of the most cost effective sources of new direct to hotel bookings. Significantly cheaper per booking than the approximately 15 to 20% commission that many hotels pay to online travel agencies (OTAs).

Hotels that are able to package their expertise into creative digital formats can tap into a huge demand for high quality, local information and use that as a driver for online bookings.

For the majority of hotels, the sales department is normally divided into different functions such as Leisure, MICE, Corporate, Govt, Outside Catering etc. The competition today is cut throat and frankly, the job is so so much easier if you are in a newer property with better facilities and rooms.

The job doesn't end with just selling though. So let's say even if you close a 1000 paxs wedding dinner for your hotel, your job on paper is done but not in reality. Everything from that point onwards and until the function is over, you will personally need to ensure that your client is happy with the services and then bid him/her farewell but only after the full payment is completed.

In some hotels, the sales managers are also responsible for the shortfall, should the customer abscond for any reason whatsoever. So always remember this policy only accept functions with full payment before the event starts. Should you decide to give credit for any reason whatsoever, please ensure the GM and FC counter signs on the proforma invoice.

But in the end, working in a hotel sales department a thrilling experience and you get to meet and closely interact with people you don't normally meet, such as celebrities, politicians and CEOs. Career progression is also superfast but this job is absolutely performance oriented.

And when the sales department does well, the happiest person in the hotel is the GM and the most stressed will be the Banquet Manager and the Executive Chef.

Finishing 10 days of back to back functions, a short rest end of the month and looking forward to record breaking May 2025 👍👍
