Hin Bus Depot presents the first edition of ๐—–๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—Ÿ๐—”๐—•, a screening programme launched as part of Weekends by Think City. Taking place at the historic UAB Building, this inaugural edition is co-curated by Amanda Ariawan and Ivan Gabriel, and spotlights three thoughtfully selected films by directors from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Through a mix of performative video, short film, and documentary, CineLAB presents compelling and intimate stories that reflect the cultural and emotional landscapes of Southeast Asia.

The screening features Storyboard Suli (2023) by Anggun Priambodo from Indonesia, ๅๅนดๆ ‘ๆœจ๏ผŒ็™พๅนดๆ ‘ไบบ (2015) by Malaysian artist Okui Lala and August Letters (2021) by Mai Huyแปn Chi (Chi Mai) and Xuรขn-Hแบก from Vietnam. Together, these works explore themes of identity, gender, and environmental change through poetic, humorous, and experimental storytelling. Eschewing idealised portrayals, the video works offer nuanced reflections on the personal and collective forces that shape Southeast Asian life, opening space for deeper connection through these moving images.

Please note that while the screening is free, registration is required as seating is limited. Register now via the link https://forms.gle/Cu8hE5ahxWdmTVvD8 or scan the QR code on the last slide to secure your spot!

Curated by Adeline Kueh and Hazel Lim, the Penang edition at Hin Bus Depot continues the exploration of care and kinship through the work of intergenerational artists. This iteration expands on themes of island living, pulau-ness by highlighting shared and divergent ideas about home and household management. It considers how temperature and humidity intersect with ongoing urban redevelopment and the climate emergency, while reflecting on historical connections between Singapore and Penang as former trading posts. The exhibition poses critical questions: What shared notions of belonging shape our contemporary understanding of home? How do movement, displacement, reciprocity, and care influence the making and naming of a home? What other critical perspectives emerge in these contexts?

Their practices respond to what was, both materially and metaphorically, allowing fragments of the past to resurface within the present.

Emerging from remains and residues, each work dialogues with objects, places, and fleeting moments in time. Through gestures of reconstruction and speculative thought, the installations attempt to retrieve and reframe what might have been overlooked or left unsaid, thereby reconfiguring the spatial and emotional contours of the room and its contents.

From documentations of ๐˜—๐˜ฆ๐˜ฌ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ ๐˜•๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ด to imagined architectures of liminal bodies and tables, to windows that fracture and frame time, ๐™ง๐™š๐™จ๐™ž๐™™๐™ช๐™š๐™จ: ๐™๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™ค๐™ฃ ๐™ข๐™ฎ ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™จ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™ฎ opens up a layered field of impressions, of memory, displacement, and possibility. Weโ€™re excited to welcome and introduce Arundhati Kartik (b. India), a Singapore-based artist whose practice explores collective phenomenological experiences through the depiction of light. She will join us in Penang as our , culminating in an open studio at the Hin Residency Space starting at the end of the week.

Using the window as a poetic object, she explores notions of human interconnectivity, longing and contemplation through different iterations of windows and perspectives. Primarily working with drawings, light and projected media to depict subtlety and reflections, she transforms personal experiences into shared ones, with a focus on how one responds to and connects with spaces and the passage of time.

Arundhati is a recent BA (Hons) Fine Arts graduate from . She has exhibited and curated various shows under her institution as well as Alliance Franรงaise de Singapour. She is a recipient of the Mahindra Search for Talent Scholarship, 2020-21 and The LASALLE Scholarship 2024-25. More recently, she was nominated for the International TAKIFUJI Art Award 2024, and is a recipient of the Winston Oh Travelogue Award, 2025.

Since 1999, the Winston Oh Travelogue Award has awarded graduating students from the various Fine Arts programmes at LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore the opportunity to explore and pursue their practice across different South-east Asian countries, allowing for the recipients to experience the different perspectives and paradigm shifts that different cultures can offer. Taking its inspiration from Mary Anne Radmacher quote, โ€œHaving seen the moon shine on the other side of the world: The Winston Oh Travelogue Award 2025โ€ explores the similarities and connections that we form across borders, albeit the differences. Coordinated by Adeline Kueh, Senior Lecturer at LASALLE-UAS, the award supports recipients in showcasing their works, findings and experience in September.

Stay tuned for programme updates, and feel free to say hi if you spot her around Hin!
