If children are going to learn about Malaysia,
does it always have to be through books and facts?

Not this time.

On 13 September, we’re bringing children together for an afternoon of treasure hunting, puzzles, crafts, stories and discovery — all inspired by Malaysia.

📖 Listen to stories about our land and culture
🇲🇾 Discover the many faces of Malaysia

This isn’t a classroom lesson.

It’s about playing, exploring, asking questions and discovering something new — perhaps even a few things about Malaysia that the children didn’t know before.

Because sometimes, the best way to learn about a place is simply to become curious about it.

In conjunction with Malaysia Day (16 September),
Landik × Tapang Tree Book House × MYY Learning Hub × Lepak Miri
are bringing you this special afternoon for children aged 6–12.

In December 2025, we organised an Empower Programme and Graduation Celebration for the Penan children from Eastwood, Miri. Around 30 children of different ages spent a day at MYY Learning Hub, playing board games, participating in interactive activities, and exploring the library.

For some of them, it was their first time travelling on a large coach. For others, it was their first time riding an escalator. The world outside their village felt both unfamiliar and exciting.

We often hear Malaysia being celebrated as a multicultural nation, whether in Peninsular Malaysia or East Malaysia. Around us are Malays, Chinese, Indians, and the many Indigenous communities of this land. Intercultural marriages are becoming increasingly common as well.

Yet, how much do we truly know about the people who live around us?

We may share a common language to communicate, but do we have opportunities to genuinely know one another?

In fact, if you ask people around you, many may not know that among Sarawak’s more than 20 Indigenous ethnic groups is a small community that is little known locally, yet recognised internationally — the Penan people.

This Saturday, we once again have the privilege of helping organise a programme that brings Penan children from the interior to meet people from different backgrounds. Through games, conversations, and shared experiences, we hope to create opportunities for greater understanding and connection.

Perhaps we cannot fully understand one another’s cultures and life stories in a single day. But every meaningful encounter is a beginning.

If you have some time to spare, we would love for you to join us as a volunteer companion. (We are looking for 1–2 volunteers.)

May we continue to grow in this diverse society — learning respect through understanding, and learning acceptance through our differences. Not merely living side by side, but choosing to step into one another’s worlds, listen to one another’s stories, and appreciate the richness that diversity brings.

Because true diversity is not simply knowing that others exist. It is taking the time to know, understand, and value one another.
