Launched in 1998, the Festival has gone beyond the fondest dreams of the organizers to the extent that for some years now, the Festival has established itself solidly as Malta’s longest-running high culture event with an ever-widening international dimension. The creation and inclusion of the Victoria International Arts Festival in the popular festa season in honour of St George, Protector of the

island of Gozo, was an innovation that confirmed St George’s basilica’s leading role in Gozo’s cultural scene. Joseph Vella, composer, university lecturer and perhaps the most esteemed musical director in the Maltese islands.

And the 28th edition of VIAF comes to a resounding close this Monday, 14 July, at St George's Basilica, 8pm, with a concert featuring works by Joseph Vella (VIAF's co-founder and first artistic director), Vaughan Williams, and Giuseppe Farrugia, to whom this edition was dedicated. Farrugia's 'Messa pei Defunti' (1891), which has not been played since its one performance in 1892, will see the light of day by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of VIAF's resident conductor, Philip Walsh. The Laudate Pueri Choir of St George's Basilica (director: George J. Frendo) together with the Ca****la Sanctae Catharinae (director: Alex Vella Gregory) will join soloists Antonino Interisano (Tenor) and Louis Andrew Cassar (baritone). The work has been edited for modern performance by Francis Camilleri. Entrance is always free, that's our policy!

This year's 28th edition of VIAF is dedicated to one of Gozo's most illustrious citizens, Mgr Giuseppe Farrugia. Prelate, orator, musician, architect, designer: you name it, he excelled at it. St George's Basilica and La Stella Philharmonic Band are privileged owners of much of his loved music, and Saturday's concert by the La Stella Philharmonic under the direction of Mro John Galea, will not only be dedicated to Mgr Farrugia but the programme will exclusively feature works that Farrugia wrote for La Stella. A few of these pieces have never been performed since his time. The concert, on Saturday 12 July, will be held in St George's Square and will start at 8pm. As usual, it's a free entry.

The ethos of VIAF has always been two-pronged: cultural and educational. Its focus on up-and-coming young musicians and artists, encouraging them to perform and exhibit their talents to a live audience has never wavered. A special lunchtime concert in this regard will be this Saturday, 12th July, at the Aula Mgr G. Farrugia, 11.30am. Three promising debutants will be given a platform to perform on. These are Thiago Said (Pianoforte), Nikolai Matvei Mifsud (Saxophone) and Kristina Mifsud (Pianoforte). Come along and encourage tomorrow's professionals! The concert is free of charge.

The Auric Saxophone Quartet are well known for their exquisite musicianship and wonderful entertaining! Coming over from London, they will be with us this Friday, 11th July, with a programme of works by Telemann, Bach, Rimsky-Korsakov, Elgar, Shostakovich, Watson, and more. The venue is the charming courtyard of the Bishop's Curia on Republic Street. The free entry policy is a bonus!

They say it takes two to tango. Well, there's going to be four of them. A tango evening like no other we've had so far, with the Leo Gasso Tango Project ensemble coming over Uruguay, Germany and Malta to regale us with an extraordinary array of 'wild imaginings'. Leo Gasso (bandoneon/singer), Ando Andushaj (Violin), Sophia Price (Double Bass) and Juliette Lopez (Pianoforte) will perform works by Piazzolla, Troilo, Plaza, Belvedere and many many more, on Thursday 10 July at the Aula Mgr G. Farrugia, 8.30pm. This is as special as it gets, don't miss it!

'With harps ever tun'd ... they introduce their sacred song.' Thus writes Milton in Book 3 of Paradise Lost. We are delighted to listen to the 'tun'd harp' this Wednesday, 9 July, at the Oratory Don Bosco Chapel at 8pm. Well-known harpist Jacob will present a recital of works by Handel, Dussek, Hasselmans, Zabel, Godefroid, and Salzedo. An eclectic mix of styles and genres that cannot fail to thrill us. An added bonus is always the free entry policy that VIAF implements for its events. Come along!

And we're on the home straight. After a dazzling array of stupendous concerts that VIAF offered this year, we come to the last piano recital, another display of wonderful music for pianoforte, this time by Norwegian prize winner, Mikkel Berg-Eriksen. Works by Chopin, Mozart, Grieg and Eriksen himself will be performed. This concert will be at the Aula Mgr Farrugia on Tuesday, 8 July, starting at 8.30pm. All these treats are free of charge!

German saxophonist Stephanie Winzen and Italian pianist Giulia Mandruzzato will present a concert of wonderful pieces by Piazzolla, Iturralde, Ravel, and more on Monday 7 July at the Aula Mgr Farrugia. The concert starts at 8.30pm and entrance is always free! This promises to be another thrilling performance!

VIAF is delighted to welcome young, brilliant pianist, Daphne Delicata, to give the third piano recital in this year's 28th edition of the Festival. A local girl of whom Gozo is very proud, Daphne is fast making a name for herself, with an impressive CV to her credit. Years ago she had participated in our Debutants' concert. Now, reading for a B.Mus at prestigious Cambridge University, Daphne will be performing works by Beethoven, Chopin and Debussy. Entrance is always free. Not to be missed, if you'd like to treat yourself to something special.

And the 18th concert in the chamber music series for this year's 28th edition of VIAF will feature two of Malta's foremost musicians. Godfrey Mifsud (Clarinet) and Maria-Elena Farrugia (Pianoforte) will regale us with a range of works from Gershwin to Bernstein, Arnold to Piazzolla, Scott to Cassar. The concert will be on Friday 4 July at the Aula Mgr G. Farrugia, 8pm. Entrance is always free.

Trio Colette, a wind ensemble featuring three wonderful Italian musicians, Chiara Telleri (Oboe), Anna Lycia Gialdi (Clarinet), and Cecilia Medi (Bassoon). They will perform works by Mozart, Ibert, Tomasi and Ghezzi. The concert will take place at the Oratory Don Bosco Chapel and starts at 8pm. Another concert that is free of charge!
