Lunchtime Concerts Tal-Pilar Church

We're back on track come December :-) Save the date.

Our first lunchtime concert for the season will be held on the 20th of December at 11:30 hrs featuring a beautiful display of Christmas Baroque music and evergreen carols performed by the St James Consort.

Meet the musician:

Sarah Spiteri is the violist of the LUMIA FLUTE QUARTET who will be performing works by Michael Haydn and Georg Schneider on 17 May.

Sarah Spiteri is a regular performer on both violin and viola with a deep love for chamber music performances. She commenced her musical studies in Malta, and followed further tuition at the Conservatoire in Lyon and the Accademia Chigiana in Siena where she followed masterclasses with Boris Belkin for violin, Riccardo Santoboni in Computer Music, and Martin Outram for viola. She is founder member of VIBE, Malta’s own Baroque ensemble performing on period instruments.

She holds diplomas from the Trinity College of Music in performance, a BA Hons in Theatre Studies from the University of Malta and is currently reading MSc at Manchester University in Profound and Complex Learning Difficulties.

A little note .....

A rare but touching story of one composer helping out another.

Michael Haydn, younger brother of Joseph, was commissioned to write six duos for violin and viola on his own, but fell ill. His good friend Mozart swooped in to complete the final two duos. Mozart's attempts to make his own contributions sound like Haydn are obvious, yet MOzart's refined hand is unmistakable. Mozart's two duos are much more sophisticated both in tonality and in the more equal treatment of the two instruments. Still, together they form a pleasing set that is perhaps too often overlooked.

A little note ....

Michael Haydn was acquainted with Mozart during their mutual sojourn in Salzburg. Mozart held Haydn's work in high esteem.

Several of Michael Haydn's works influenced Mozart. To give just three examples: the Te Deum "which Wolfgang was later to follow very closely in K. 141";[10] the finale of the Symphony No. 23 which influenced the finale of the G major Quartet, K. 387; and the (fugal) transition and (nonfugal) closing theme of the G major second subject expositions of the finales of both Michael's Symphony No. 29 (1784) and Mozart's monumental last Symphony No. 41 ("Jupiter") (1788), both in C major.

A little note .....

For our upcoming Lunchtime Concert, flute quartets from the classical period are featured, one of which is by Michael Haydn.

Born in Salzburg, Michael was the younger brother of Joseph Haydn and a close friend of W A Mozart. As a young boy, together with his brother, he was a boy soprano at St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna choir, and it was Michael's singing that was the more admired.

Michael was appointed Kapellmeister at Großwardein and later, in 1762, at Salzburg, where he remained for 43 years, during which he wrote over 360 compositions comprising both church and instrumental music.

A little note ...

Georg Schneider was extremely well known during his time for his output in one of the more popular musical genres - the sinfonia concertante. This genre combined the richness of sonority and clarity of structure that were the most attractive features of the symphony with the tunefulness and technical
virtuosity of the concerto.

Such works, initially popular beginning in the 1760s in the great musical centers of Paris and Mannheim, where the best performers congregated, were scored for a group of two
or more soloists with orchestral accompaniment.

Meet the musician:

Yaroslav Miklukho is the cellist of the LUMIA FLUTE QUARTET who will be performing works by Michael Haydn and Georg Schneider on 17 May.

Yaroslav started studying violoncello in his native country, Ukraine. After obtaining a master’s degree from the Kiev State Conservatory he became a member of the orchestra of the National Ballet of Ukraine and later joined the Kiev State Symphony Orchestra.

Yaroslav performed with several other orchestras such as the Filarmonic Der Nationen and the Cairo State Symphony Orchestra. He participated in concert tours which took him around Europe, Africa (Cairo Opera House) and America (Carnegie Hall in New York, Severance Hall in Cleveland). Yaroslav also performed as a soloist and with various foreign and local chamber music ensembles.

He is currently the sub-leader of the cello group of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra.
