Phad Krapao (also spelled Pad Kra Pao or Pad Kaprow) is one of Thailand’s most beloved and iconic street food dishes. It literally means “stir-fried holy basil,” as krapao refers to holy basil — a herb with a bold, peppery aroma that defines this dish.

Phad Krapao became popular in Thailand during the mid-20th century when street food culture started booming. Locals wanted quick, flavorful, and affordable meals — and this dish delivered exactly that. Traditionally, it’s made by stir-frying minced pork, chicken, or beef with garlic, chilies, soy sauce, oyster sauce, and, of course, lots of holy basil. It’s almost always served over steamed rice and topped with a crispy fried egg (kai dao), adding an irresistible richness.

Today, Phad Krapao is more than just street food — it’s a symbol of Thai culinary identity. It captures the essence of Thai cooking: spicy, aromatic, balanced, and deeply comforting.
