In 2019, to mark the 40th anniversary of London Calling, The Clash were celebrated across London in a couple of standout ways. One of the most eye-catching tributes saw buses on the London Buses route 19 (one of the oldest routes in the city) wrapped in artwork inspired by the album, a clever nod to “Rudie Can’t Fail,” which name-checks the route right in its opening line: “On the route of the 19 bus.”

At the same time, the city that gave the album its name hosted a special exhibition featuring photos and memorabilia tied to London Calling, held at one of London’s leading museums.

I love this story... In 1972, a then unknown performance artist named Dieter Meier installed a metal plaque outside Kassel railway station in Germany which read "On 23 March 1994, from 3 to 4 pm, Dieter Meier will stand on this plaque". 22 years later a group of people waited at the plaque to see if Dieter, who by this time was world-famous as one half of Swiss synthpop act Yello and who had huge hits with 'Oh Yeah' and 'The Race', would actually turn up. As promised, he did indeed show at 3pm on the dot and stood on the plaque for exactly 1 hour chatting with the appreciative fans. What a guy!
