The easiest way I found to spot a skilled DJ vs a DJ who is reliant on equipment:

1. The skilled dj will always have at least 1 ear open while mixing but most will remove headphones from their ears completely during a mix & focus attention to what's coming through the monitor or PA & not the headphones.

2. The skilled DJ will never be seen looking at a laptop mid mix even though they might be using one.

3. A skilled DJ can play off anything suitable vs can ONLY play on their own controller
