From Galveston in 1865 to military communities around the world today, service members continue the responsibility of preserving freedom, honoring history, and bringing people together.

June 19, 1865 – The day Union Army troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, bringing the news of freedom and enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth is more than a celebration — it is a reminder of perseverance, sacrifice, education, and unity. It is a day to acknowledge our history, celebrate our culture, and continue building toward the future generations deserve.

JuneteenthKC is proud to officially announce the 2026 Award Winners of the 9th Annual JuneteenthKC Cultural Parade!

On Saturday, June 6, more than 65 parade entries proudly marched into the heart of Kansas City's Historic 18th & Vine Jazz District, celebrating African American Pride, Culture, Heritage, and Community. We are honored to recognize the outstanding organizations, clubs, businesses, families, and performance groups whose creativity, spirit, and excellence helped make this year's parade one of the most successful in our organization's history.

As we celebrate Juneteenth next weekend, we honor not only the day freedom was announced to the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865, but also the powerful symbols that remind us of resilience, hope, and the continued journey toward equality.

Many people recognize the Pan-African colors of red, black, and green during Juneteenth celebrations, but the official Juneteenth flag carries its own powerful message:

🔴⚪🔵 The Colors – The red, white, and blue remind us that formerly enslaved people and their descendants are and have always been Americans. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆.

🌅 The Arc – Represents a new horizon, new opportunities, and the promise of a brighter future.

⭐ The Star – Honors Texas, the Lone Star State where the final announcement of freedom took place, while also representing freedom reaching African Americans across all 50 states.

✨ The Burst Around the Star – Inspired by a nova, symbolizing a new beginning and the birth of freedom.
