From the late 1980s to the mid 1990s, Rigo Star produced a string of Mbilia Bel albums. Most feature Rigo on all instruments, including programmed keyboards alongide his more familiar guitar. Originally aimed perhaps at the frothier side of Congolese music, today they can sound of their time and to some degree, have been overlooked. Nevertheless Mbilia’s unique bell-like voice and Rigo’s skill can not be ignored, and on this 1993 recording, as his guitar elegantly arises from the generic keyboard sounds, his bass propels the whole song forwards to an entirely satisfactory conclusion.

Molingano by Zaiko Langa Langa from the Album “Nkolo Mboka”* – Avis De Recherche
Some 57 years after it’s first incarnation, Zaiko Langa Langa took to the stage at Zenith in Paris just over a week ago in front of a sold-out audience. The set list comprising of old and new songs, including at least 2 penned by Papa Wemba, underpinned the show as a celebration of this legendary academy of rumba and today’s chosen tune from the 1995 Sterns release made the setlist last week also, with Roxy Shimpaka’s mesmerising solo guitar.
Starting out as young upstarts in the late 1960s, their ambition was to herald a new dawn in Congolese popular music, removing the horn section so emblematic of the old guard of Franco and Rochereau et al, and accentuating the guitar and the kit, their songs were bursting at the seams with youthful creative energy.
Zaiko was above all else the well pool of household names of the future. Wemba, Evoloko, Bozi Boziana, Dindo Yogo, to name but a few, would go on to have massive solo careers. But it was founding member a current president, Jossart N’Yoka Longo, who led the current iteration of the group onto the stage at Zenith just over a week ago.
