The inaugural CPF Nairobi Diamond 10km run scheduled for next Sunday (July 27th) has been postponed to August 17th. The race’s Technical Director George Kariuki attributed the postponement to international and continental championships.

“The Commonwealth Games are taking place in Glasgow, Scotland and the World Junior athletics championships in Eugene Oregon are ongoing and later the Africa Senior Athletics Championships in Marakesh, Morocco which have forced us to postpone the event,” he said.

Kariuki said that most of the athletics top officials concerned are involved in this international and continental championships where they are away and will be back by mid next month.

The technical director said they have so far received 1,400 entries and were targeting a maximum of 5,000 runners where the registration fee has been pegged at Sh1,000 per runner.

Kariuki said former World and Commonwealth Games marathon champion Douglas Wakiihuri and four time Boston Marathon winner Catherine “The Great” Ndereba will participate in the veteran’s category.

He said the organizers have increased registration centres and they include Tortoise Hotel in Kapsabet, Keelu hotel in Iten, Nyahururu Stadium, Kaptagat Hotel, Ewaso Ngiro Project in Narok, Athletics Kenya headquarters at Riadha House and the Nairobi regional offices based at the Nyayo Stadium Swimming Pool Complex.

Registration can also be done at County Pension Fund CPF offices in Nairobi, Garissa,Kisumu, Eldoret and Mombasa.

The top runner in the elite 10km race will pocket Sh250, 000 while the second will receive Sh200,000 and third Sh150,000.

The race will also feature veteran athletes in addition to the men and women 10km categories.

The event is organized by Athletics Kenya Nairobi County in conjunction with Golazo Sports, the company behind the organization of the Diamond League events in Europe among others.

Kariuki said the arrival of Laptrust now CPF as the title sponsor had set the stage for an even more competitive event featuring top runners.

“We have now ample time to prepare a world class event in August and I expect top runners to feature,” added Kariuki.

Kariuki said the race, themed “Our country, our, our city, our pride”, will show the unity and aspirations of the Kenyan people general and residents of Nairobi in particular.

We requested your attendance this morning to announce a number of issue that have arisen over the last one week.

First is to inform you that we are proud to unveil the event Title partner for Nairobi Diamond 10km Run.

Our event Title Partner is LAPTRUST.

We are very very happy to note that LAPTRUST management has seen the potential of this event at its early stages and that shows their level of innovation and foresight. It has also shown their interest in taking an initiative in looking at the welfare of our athletics by addressing the social-economic issues that affect them.

Having got a Title Partner and after consultations, the Event Secretariat finds it important to postpone the event to 27th July 2014 so that we make proper arrangements for the benefit of our athletes and success of the event.

In this light we have increased the prize package to over 2Million Kenya Shillings. We have also introduced in collaboration with the Title Partner a prize package for veteran athletes who will participate in the event.

Our key objective is to make Nairobi Diamond 10km Run the largest and most lucrative road race event in the region.
