WHAT IS YOUR LOVE LANGUAGE?

The wedding season is fast approaching. This is one of the busiest periods for planners, couples, vendors, pastors and all other parties involved. My encouragement today is for the young couples who are getting married (and by extension, those of us already in marriage).

Dr. Gary Chapman introduced the concept of love languages. They are 5 in number and they represent the different love languages we speak:

1. Words of Affirmation
This is for those of us who find strength in positive affirmation. We value words and are encouraged by the littlest of comments.

2. Receiving Gifts
This is for those who feel loved and appreciated when they are gifted, no matter the kind of gift received.

3. Quality Time
For those who value time spent with loved ones, this is for you. The presence and listening ear of a spouse are important to you.

4. Acts of Service
This is for those who feel loved when their spouses help them out with a particular activity they are involved in.

5. Physical Touch
This is for those who feel loved when their spouses physically touch them.

Take some time today and visit Gary Chapman's website for more information. You and your loved one can take the test to determine your love languages.

Cheers to all couples wedding this holiday, and to those celebrating their anniversaries.

We are back after a short break and today we'd like to discuss a touchy topic: Marrying Young

It is a common trend these days for couples to wait until they are a little older to tie the knot. A number of factors contribute to this e.g. time taken for one to complete their university education, desire for one to be financially independent, saving for the perfect wedding, waiting for the perfect mate, testing the waters before settling down etc.

Whatever reasons one has, they should consider the pros and cons. If you wish to complete your education first, then by all means, please do so, it is for your own good and the good of your spouse and children.

If its about financial independence, be clear about what financial independence is to you and your future spouse. Is it something that you must achieve alone or can you achieve it as a team?

Concerning perfect weddings, they don't exist. But, you can have a beautiful wedding without necessarily getting into debt. Perfect mates also don't exist but good and Godly people do. With God's blessing, true love and commitment (and a readiness to forgive), you can have a beautiful wedding and good marriage.

Whether you choose to get married young or older, the important thing is to make the right decision, have God's blessing and that of your parents - and get in it to stay in it.

MISS BRIDE...

We dedicate this week to the lady of the day: The Bride.

We will look at bridal hair, make up, gown and accessories. The wedding season is fast approaching, so sisters, take note.

To start us off, let me ask: Which is better? To rent, to buy or to tailor make your wedding dress?

RENTING:
Renting is considered the cheapest and most practical method. This is because most of us use the wedding gown on the wedding day only. If you choose to rent, make sure the gown is in good if not perfect condition. If there is need for adjustments, let that translate in the cost.

BUYING:
Buying is good because it allows you the freedom to choose from a variety. Your budget will dictate what type of gown you get. Designer gowns are of course more costly. Some go up to 100,000 shillings. Simpler designs can go for as little as 15000 shillings. On average though, you can get a good gown for 25,000 - 40,000.

CUSTOM MADE / TAILOR MADE:
If you have a flair for unique designs and a GOOD tailor to complement that, then you can have your gown tailor made. This will allow you add any unique elements you wish to add. Prices also vary from tailor to tailor.

All in all, look as fabulous as you can. It is your day and you are the icing on the cake

The Baby Shower Cont...

Gifts:
Invest in a few customized baby gear e.g. customized baby blankets and hats.
Consider the little things that no one thinks about: Coconut oil for mum and baby massage, breast feeding pump, baby Calpol, Bonnisan (for colic), Dentinox gel (for teething) and maternity pads for mum.
Try being non conventional by getting mum to be foods that will boost milk production e.g. Oats, Drinking Chocolate/Choco Primo, Njahe, Green grams etc. This will go a long way in helping her feed baby.
Diapers...diapers...diapers, please don't forget those. They are every mum's best friend.

After Fun and Games,
Encourage mum and reassure her as she prepares for the birth processes. We all know how scary labor can be especially for first time mums. If she’s a Christian, remind her that she’s carrying a great blessing.
Encourage dad too. He will have a lot of adjusting to do. (The sleepless nights, intimacy downtime, baby cries and sometimes moody mum).
Talk about some important issues like how to bath a baby, baby massage, taking baby out for sunshine, navel care for a new born and issues like recovery for mum and post natal depression(how to recognize it and where to get help).

With Love,
Patricia

THE BABY SHOWER
I just love the sound of that: BABY SHOWER. It has a nice ring to it.
As a Planner and mum, I realized that there are some little things that can make a Baby Shower really meaningful. Here is a list you can incorporate when planning a friend’s baby shower:

Involve the husband (if he’s available). He probably knows her tastes and preferences very well. Make sure he knows that it’s meant to be a surprise.

Décor:
Balloons and ribbons are easy to find and use. Consider colors that represent the baby’s gender or mum’s favorite colors.
Where possible, have a theme dress code.
Set the coffee table against the wall and make that the gift station. Simple table linen will work.
Let the cake double up as a centerpiece for the gift table.
Alternatively, have a separate gift station and use the coffee table as a snack bar.
Ladies, be sure to clean up before you leave. Mummy is too heavy and too tired to do the cleaning.

More Tips to follow.

Cheers
Patricia

Bridesmaids

One of the most grueling tasks a bride has to work on is that of selecting bridesmaids. I remember when I had to make a similar decision. On the one hand I had family members and on the other hand I had friends. I chose to have my friends and my baby sister stand with me on my big day.

This was primarily because they knew me best. The had seen my best and worst and loved me nonetheless. They were my prayer team. They were and still are my go to girls.

Here are three things you should consider when selecting your team:

1. Team Size
A larger team is more inclusive but can be quite difficult to manage. A smaller team is less inclusive but easier to manage.

2. Bride's Needs
Do you want your sisters, cousins, friends and neighbours to walk down the aisle with you? Do you love the company of a large crowd? Do you want just a few close friends or family members? It's your take dear bride.

3. Cost
It's a general rule with most brides that the bridesmaids cater for their attires and accessories. However, there are 'hidden costs'. For instance, the larger your team, the more cars you will need to ferry them around.

All in all, remember the goal is to get married. If you opt for a smaller team, you can give other responsibilities to those who will be left out e.g. cake cutting, family/friends dance, ushering/ welcoming team etc.

P.S. Won't it be better if your glam girls could also double up as your prayer girls? You will need all the prayer and encouragement you can get as you prepare for the wedding - and afterwards.

Cheers.

Welcome Aboard

It has been a wonderful two years and counting. Becoming a wife is a process I will cherish all my life. This is not because of the title but because of the greatest gift I got: a forever friend (my hubby).

It is with this love that I decided to stand with other brides (and grooms) as they prepare for their big day. My mission is to:

1.Help couples get their dream wedding without getting into debt.
2. Help couples see past the ceremony and prepare for marriage (the life after the ceremony).

The services I offer include:
a. Full wedding planning
b. Wedding day Coordination
c. Decor services
d. Honeymoon planning (esp. budget honeymoons)

To help couples see past their wedding day, I encourage couples and newly weds to take up the Royal Brides Family Legacy Classes. This is a three session program where we tackle 3 key components to building strong families:
Family Alter
Owning your first home
Building a family business

As a rule, I give couples the task of drafting a 5 year plan even as they draft their vows.

My greatest desire is to see couples have both beautiful weddings and successful marriages.

Cheers.
Patricia
