Nonna Anna Maria’s story moves between Toronto and Calabria, but her heart has always belonged to the flavors of home. Her favorite dish: pasta with ’nduja & ricotta. Bold, comforting, and deeply Calabrian.

This dish is a perfect example of Calabrian home cooking: humble ingredients, cooked slowly, meant to be shared. The kind of recipe that lives in memory, passed down without measurements, made by instinct and care.

Real people. Real kitchens. Real recipes passed down through generations.

Meet Nonno Vittorio, who grew up on the Ionian Coast and spent his life behind the stove at his restaurant at San Domenico Beach Club. His cooking is shaped by the sea, by time, and by Sunday lunches that gather everyone around the table.

One of his most loved dishes is Alici Ariganate—a simple, powerful recipe made with anchovies, garlic, red chili, olive oil, and a splash of vinegar. The kind of dish you’d find on the table on a Sunday afternoon, cooked quickly, shared slowly.

Serve hot or warm, with crusty bread to soak up every drop of that garlicky, tangy oil.

This is Calabria.

In Italy, the night of January 5th carries the scent of sweets, laughter, and ancient stories.
La Befana, the beloved old woman who flies on her broom, arrives bringing gifts to good children and a little carbone dolce to those who misbehaved — always with a smile.

Rooted in pagan rituals and later embraced by Christian tradition, the Befana represents the end of the old year and the promise of renewal. Families gather, tables fill with homemade desserts, and villages come alive with warmth, irony, and nostalgia.

At Calabria Food Fest, we celebrate traditions like this — because food is never just food.
