The other great fresco in the private salons is by Giovanni da San Giovanni, where the full narrative complexity of the scene comes into view: the expulsion of H**e and the ascent of Ganymede to Olympus coexist within a single, powerful composition.

At the center stands the eagle, symbol of Zeus, rendered with striking expressive force. On one side, we sense the anger with which Zeus casts out; on the other, the surprising gentleness of his gesture — his right arm — as he welcomes and lifts Ganymede toward Olympus.

As in the fresco by Francesco Albani, the four lateral scenes here also depict the metamorphoses of Zeus, further enriching the mythological narrative.

Both works were created using gold leaf, a technique that was innovative at the time and widely employed in Renaissance Florence, capable of lending light and preciousness to the entire composition.

In 1633, Prince Giovan Carlo de’ Medici had to choose the artist who would decorate the Sala di Apollo in Palazzo Pitti.
To make his decision, a real artistic competition was held, with its final taking place at Villa Corsini a Mezzomonte.

Competing for the commission were two leading painters of the time: Giovanni da San Giovanni and Francesco Albani.
The assigned themes revolved around myth and transformation: the expulsion of H**e, the ascent of Ganymede to Olympus, and the metamorphoses of Zeus.

In this carousel, we see the fresco Albani chose for the competition, now considered one of his masterpieces.
The scene depicts the ascent of Ganymede, observed by Zeus as he is welcomed into Olympus.

Yet it was precisely one detail that sparked debate among critics of the time: Ganymede’s foot, seemingly stepping out of the scene and resting on the frame with striking realism.
A display of technical virtuosity that, rather than impressing, was judged excessive—and ultimately contributed to Albani losing the competition.
