There’s a morning before every wedding that no one sees except the people inside it. This one happened between the rooms of a terracotta-colored villa, arched windows letting the light in one piece at a time.

On one side, friends raising a glass before they’ve even tied their bow ties, laughing loud in a stone cellar. On the other, the quiet of a dress taking shape one lace at a time, a bunch of white calla lilies set beside an old lamp, a row of women looking out the same window, saying nothing.

There’s a point in every wedding when the party stops being organized and just becomes lived. It happened here in front of the cake, six tiers dressed in white roses, cut while the sky over the lake opened up in fireworks. The two of them, backs turned, watching together, a moment that didn’t need to be planned to be perfect.

Then the crystal coupe tower, filled glass by glass while the guests were already raising theirs. And the toast, every hand reaching toward the middle, a stolen kiss in the middle of it all, the kind of laughter that only comes from people who’ve known each other forever.

A venue outside Mantua that looks like it walked out of a cartoon. Willow trees trailing in the water, little brick houses, flowers absolutely everywhere.

I’ve been carrying one image around for years, a table you can see straight through. Plexiglass legs, plexiglass chairs, a centrepiece full of real water with flowers floating inside. Nothing in the way. Just the landscape, running right through the middle of the table.

Haven’t pulled it off exactly like that. Yet.

This is the Italy nobody shows you.✨

Through the glass of a French door, Lake Como becomes the frame for an embrace: her laughing, him watching her, guests waiting just behind.

The morning is made of small details the dress laced up by the window, the bouquet breathed in with eyes closed, three sisters standing shoulder to shoulder taking in the same view before it all begins. Then the ceremony, with towering floral urns holding their own against the mountains.
