The Nordic House in Reykjavík is a cultural institution run by the Nordic Council of Ministers. The goal of the Nordic House is to nurture and strengthen cultural ties between Iceland and the other Nordic countries. To this day, the Nordic house has organized and initiated various cultural events and exhibitions. The Nordic House also has a unique library, which lends out literature only in Nordic
languages, a vegetarian restaurant an exhibition hall and a concert/cinema hall. The Nordic house is designed by the world-renowned Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. The house is one of his later works and is like a hidden treasure among his better known works. They are best seen in the blue tiles on the roof of the building, in the vault of the library and in the extensive use of white, tiles and wood throughout the building. Alvar Aalto also designed furniture in most of his buildings, and in the Nordic House, all the furniture and lights were designed by him. The Nordic House produces and showcases exhibitions and events all year long, from seminars and workshops to concerts, literature events and film screenings. Whether it is for frequent guests, foreign visitors or schools and families, all tastes and ages are catered for and many events are free of charge. Norræna húsið í Reykjavík er menningarstofnun rekin af Norrænu ráðherranefndinni. Markmið Norræna hússins er að hlú að og styrkja menningartengsl milli Íslands og hinna Norðurlandanna. Fram að þessu hefur Norræna húsið skipulagt og haft frumkvæði af margvíslegum menningarviðburðum og sýningum.
Í Norræna húsinu er einnig að finna einstakt bóksafn, sem lánar út bókmenntir eingöngu á norrænum tungumálum, veitingastaðinn SÓNÓ, sýningarsali og tónleika/kvikmyndasal. Norræna húsið er hannað af hinum heimsþekkta finnska arkitekt Alvar Aalto. Húsið er eitt af hans seinni verkum og er líkt og falin demantur á meðal þekktari verka hans. Húsið ber mörg höfundareinkenni Aaltos. Þau sjást einna best í bláu flísunum á þaki hússins, í hvelfingu bókasafnsins og í hinni miklu notkun á hvítum lit, flísum og við í allri byggingunni. Alvar Aalto hannaði einnig húsgögn í flestallar byggingar sínar og í Norræna húsinu eru öll húsgögn og ljós hönnuð af honum.
