The sangeet wasn't illegal.
The baraat music was never a crime.

But lakhs of Indian families paid anyway, because someone in a suit showed up with a clipboard and a very confident tone.

PPL. Novex. IPRS. Charging ₹40K to ₹2 lakh per wedding just to play music, at events the Copyright Act already exempted.

This month, Minister Piyush Goyal and DPIIT made it official: stop demanding these fees. Weddings, sangeets, mehdnis, receptions, baraats, all covered. Zero music license required.
The law was always on your side. Now the government's voice is too.
