For the average East Indian, the season of Lent can also get rather hectic.

In the time of a global lockdown due to the COVID 19 pandemic, East Indians all over the world have modified many Lenten traditions.

Lenten and Easter foods like sweet potato godacha/chatch (pictured), mazpao/marzipan eggs are still made at home, but Sunday masses, Stations of the Cross and Holy Week services have shifted online.

YouTube channels featuring hymns and masses in the East Indian Marathi dialect, sermons by local priests, etc. are clicking in viewers and subscribers by the thousands.

Acts of charity - which are encouraged even more during the period of Lent - have taken the form of essentials being distributed by various community groups and parishes for the poor and less privileged (regardless of caste or creed and only after adhering strictly to the mandated social distancing and sanitisation requirements).

We are currently experiencing a Lent like no other, but in many ways a Lent that is also quite true to its spirit.

Happy to be sharing space here with Sheryl Fonseca of Bottle Masala and Chef Michael Swamy.

May East Indian cuisine fill up many plates and hearts!
