Studio Safdar is an independent, non-funded space for arts and activism.

Studio Safdar was established by India's pioneer street theatre group Jana Natya Manch in April 2012. In last two and a half years it has become an adda for theatre groups from Delhi and outside where they can rehearse, perform and conduct workshops. The space is dedicated to encourage engagements with community groups, to foster a culture of understanding and cooperation, aesthetic excellence and intellectual stimulation. It has established itself as an adda for theatre wallahs, a space to experiment fearlessly, a space for edgy, creative and even dissenting ideas. The space is run by the Studio Safdar Trust, and the Trustees are:

Shubha Mudgal (President), Moloyashree Hashmi (Managing Trustee), Joyoti Roy (Treasurer), Ram Rahman, Keval Arora, Surajit Sarkar, Praveen Vadhera and Sudhanva Deshpande (Executive Director, Studio Safdar).

Day 2 of the Shadipur Natak Utsav 2026 kicked off with laughter and applause and a lot of familiar faces all around! With a heartwarming performance by Gillo Repertory Theatre which captivated children and adults all alike. A special thanks to everyone who showed up!

Day One of Shadipur Natak Utsav 2026, kicked off with a lot of Heart and Warmth. With a Fabulous team of Performers ( Hum! Qaafila ) and an equally Lovely Audience, the Festival brought both Charm and Vigour to Shadipur, and the Children were the highlight of the evening.

'Ek Nawab Do Rangile'.

One Nawab, Two Rangile is a 50-minute interactive clown theatre performance that combines physical theatre, visual comedy, magic, and audience participation to celebrate play, imagination, and the shared human experience.

One Nawab, Two Rangile is more than a comedy; it is a celebration of play as a deeply human experience. Through humour, vulnerability, and imagination, the clowns invite children to celebrate their creativity and encourage adults to rediscover the playful, curious child that still lives within them.

'Kalpana Ki Cycle and Hermit Crab Ka Sapna'.

Kalpana Ki Cycle is a beautiful story about a little girl who gets a cycle from her mother. She really wants to ride it, but she does not know how to. Her brother offers to teach her. She tries diligently but keeps falling. One day she bruises her leg badly and is told to rest until it heals. Will she be able to ride it after this incident or will she decide that cycling is just not for her? This is a story about a girl who never gives up!

Hermit Crab Ka Sapna is a retelling of an old Japanese tale. A young hermit crab loses his shell, but manages to find a new one on the beach nearby. Alas, there is another problem for the young crab - he is unable to see any dreams when he sleeps. All his friends share their vivid dreams, but he has none. Join him in his search and help bring his dreams back.

'Maaye Ni Meri Akh Lag Gayi'.

Maaye Ni Meri Akh Lag Gayi follows the whimsical and heartfelt journey of Tooti, a 13-year-old Punjabi village boy whose search for his daadi’s missing slippers transforms into an epic adventure to the moon. What begins as a simple search becomes a poetic odyssey of belief, imagination, and courage.
Set in a surreal Punjabi landscape that shifts from the village courtyard to the lunar surface, the play unfolds through folk songs, physical storytelling, and surreal humor, blending realism with fantasy through the ensemble’s imagination.

Studio Safdar is organizing a Street Theatre workshop for college theatre groups based in Delhi.

Studio Safdar, named after Safdar Hashmi is an independent, non-funded space for arts and activism based in Shadi Khampur New Delhi. It was established in 2012 by Jana Natya Manch (Janam).

This 2-day workshop will be conducted by actor, director and publisher Sudhanva Deshpande. He's been with Jana Natya Manch since 1987, acting in, helping devise, and directing dozens of plays, both on the streets and in closed spaces. He's performed, and led workshops, in several countries, including Palestine, South Africa, the US, UK, Germany, Poland and the Netherlands.

Date: 5 and 6 September
Time: 12 - 4 pm

We will be accomodating two participants from each theatre group.

The play explores Werner Heisenberg’s visit to Niels Bohr and Margrethe Bohr in Copenhagen in 1941. It touches on themes such as guilt, doubt, relationships, and the limitations of the human mind. Further, the play draws parallels between Physics and life. The entire play is a conversation between the ghosts of the three characters who are trying to make sense of the lives they lived.

Navmanchan Theatre Group presents Anton Chekhov's 'The Proposal.

Synopsis:

The Proposal is a one-act farcical comedy by Anton Chekhov about Lomov, a nervous landowner who visits his neighbour Chubukov to propose marriage to his daughter Natalya. However, instead of expressing their feelings, Lomov and Natalya become involved in ridiculous arguments over land ownership and a hunting dog. Their constant quarrelling turns a simple marriage proposal into a hilarious battle of pride, ego, and misunderstanding. The play humorously exposes human greed, stubbornness, social expectations, and the comic nature of relationships, making it a lively and entertaining theatrical experience.
