In the state of Tripura, two major communities—Bengalis and Janajati—live side by side. Both communities have their own calendars—Tripurabda and Bangabda. These calendars are based on the Indian calendar; naturally, the names of the months and the names of the times are almost the same. The difference is mainly in the year. Since Tripuraabda was introduced about three years before Bangabda, Tripuraabda has now entered the year 1436, and Bangabda is in the year 1433.

The problem is that many Tiprasas are not aware of the existence of Tripuraabda. At one time, all government work, social activities and various festivals in Tripura were conducted according to the Tripuraabda. But now government work is conducted according to the English calendar, and social and religious activities are mostly carried out according to the Bengali calendar. The current generation is basically getting used to seeing this system.

As a result, an idea has developed among them that Pahela Baishakh is only the Bengali New Year. But many do not know that this day is also the New Year of the Tiprasa community—that is, “BC Katal.”

In this case, the current social media is also largely responsible. Therefore, it is extremely important to choose words thoughtfully. Today’s day should not only be referred to as ‘Bangla New Year’ but also be widely publicized as ‘Tipra/Tripura New Year’. Because, seeing the word ‘Bangla New Year’ repeatedly has created an idea among the current Tiprasa generation that it is only the New Year of Bengalis.

Therefore, to remove this misconception and to convey the correct information to the current generation, it is necessary to write more and more awareness-raising articles on this subject on social media.
