The Bong Nanny

The Bong Nanny One-of-a-kind cloud kitchen serving a plethora of authentic Bengali dishes cooked with love and delivered right to your doorstep! Thus, The Bong Nanny. Bengali.

The title of the concept that is freshly conceived for our new brand is like an alter ego of The Chaiwala. It is quite akin to alchemy, a dreamlike substrate emerging out of an imagination that’s separated from the mainstream café & continental cuisines that we have been serving until now. Therefore, the need to separate the cascade of palettes, chosen prudently from a plethora of indigenous Benga

li dishes, but nothing too ostentatious to be construed anything in excess than what one would normally crave for. The “Bong” bit is fairly conspicuous by now if one can see through the enigma. The gamut of the idea for The Bong Nanny had originated from decades into the personal history of the founder of ‘The Chaiwala’, Sukrit, which is extracted from his own words –

“I was fairly lucky to be born in a middle-class Bengali joint family who happened to be moderate– liberal. I know, all attributes of my identity are pointing towards a clichéd agnostic rebellious childhood, which of course is not actually true. I was not lucky in terms of what the average urban Bengali was entitled to during the 90s, as I spent most of my early life around role models of very hardworking, adept, and versatile yet compassionate women, the care and support systems that had enabled me to set and reach impossible feats. The women in all my family and beyond, who played an active role in the development of a child into a full-blown professional entrepreneur have been inspirational and humbling at the same time. One such powerful woman is my Nanny, Sabitri (a.k.a. Sabi), THE Nanny – she has been to me a guardian, an angel, a friend, a sister, a caring housekeeper, a fantastic cook, a traveling companion, pretty much everything which a child can imagine in the embodiment of a safe haven in absence of his mother. The list is endless. I have seen her life’s sacrifices for this family, her hardworking attitude and sincerity towards me, nurturing enough patience to tolerate a child’s nonsense, yet be oblivious to the nuisance and remain engaged to her duty. Expanding on her culinary skills, she had in her own militia of expertise, that over the years served towards her exemplary record of cooking 10-course meals for hundreds of guests year after year on my birthday, with some house help of course, but all learned and improvised on her own, delightful meals, something that I always cherished as I reminisce my earlier years now. As I have grown older, I have come to realize how difficult it is to spare decades’ worth of attention span on simple and mundane things of life, yet so significant; I understand that I could not have imagined a better childhood than what I had. I don’t believe in the afterlife, but if there’s one, and if I were to be born a human again in the next iteration, I hope that God shall be kind enough to send me Sabi 2.0. Sabi, with her variety and range of cuisines, having expanded and improved over the years, is now a prolific chef and a master of Bengali spices and aromatic blends. However, she has not been provided any greater platform to hone and exhibit her magic - an untapped potential waiting to be unleashed. Inspired and intrigued by her dedication to her niche of cooking, I found my own fresh motivation for my upcoming venture. In order to realize and actualize the concept, it was imperative that I conflate my own idea of reaching the tastebuds of the city through Sabi's mouthwatering Bengali dishes with a more personified vision for an enterprise. This suddenly struck me when I decided to earmark a title to the idea and venture that seeks to honor Sabi, my nanny, for her salt’s worth of investment in my life and family - the least I can do for her is that I create a new brand of authentic Bengali food, and give the title that smells, tastes and seeks of her signature dishes. I give you all ‘The Bong Nanny’. She started her journey with her simple and pristine ambitions, I aspire to carry out this launch with the same humility starting from scratch, taking cues from my nanny. Thus, the ABCD[Authentic. Cuisine. Delivered.] goes out as our main motto, as we venture out to deliver the most authentic and known Bengali dishes that will satisfy both your stomach and soul. We seek to serve superlative quality food at competitive prices across the expanse of South Calcutta. I believe that in order to achieve great heights, one has to accept that he is not infallible and that one must possess the courage to accept that he is prone to mistakes and failures if he wishes to rectify them and stay focused.”

The story behind the theme of the brand goes out as a window to a very condensed and skewed version of a select portion of autobiography. I guess every name has a story behind it that would bring out certain extracts of someone’s life and experience if they were to be revealed. I find that if I’m going to do this right, I might as well be honest about it. 2020 has been a rough year, perhaps there’s a bright light at the end of the tunnel. Fingers crossed.

Day 4: Updates

The fourth drive seemed to be the most challenging one for our team. Inspite of heavy rain, unpaved roads and our cars getting stuck in the mud, we managed to reach Kumirmari in North 24 Parganas, a place that has been greatly affected by the cyclone. It was almost evening when we could finally manage to set up our station with the help of the locals.
We distributed the following items and could reach out to 500+ families who are living under extremely difficult conditions.

Details of last drive -

Daal - 150kg X 75 - Rs 11250/-
Torch - 240pcs x 75 - Rs 18000/-
Mosquito net - 240 X 145 - Rs 34800/-
Muri + chire + gur - Rs 16000/-
Mustard oil - Rs 17760/-
Potatoes- Rs 3400/-
Sanitary napkins- 800x5- Rs 4000/-
Logistics - Rs 5500/-

Total expenditure- Rs 1,10,710

We thank each and every person who came forward to help us by spreading the word, raising funds and volunteering. Our drives wouldn’t have been possible without your constant support.

Though we could manage to provide some respite to the people living in these cyclone affected areas, it’s a reality that they have to constantly battle with every year. All we can do is stand by them and help them in rebuilding their lives.
We hope that you will support us in our future endeavours as well.

Day 3: Updates

Our team travelled to Nityaberia, Sunderbans for the 3rd relief drive. The villages in this area were flooded after the cyclone and the water has still not receded in various places. Many families have lost their homes to the flood and are living in dire conditions in rescue shelters. With whatever supplies we could procure with everyone’s help, we managed to reach out to 425+ families.

Here are the details of the items that we distributed:

Daal - 160kg (Rs 12000)
Oil - 480 bottles (Rs 17760)
Aloo - 300kg (Rs 3700)
Mosquito nets - 200 pcs (Rs 29000)
Torch - 200 pcs (Rs 12000)
Gur - 100kgs (Rs 5200)
Chire - 200 kgs (Rs 6600)
Muri - 100 kgs (Rs 4200)
Sanitary pads - 800pcs (Rs 4000)
Biscuit - 500 packets (Rs 5000)
Logistics - Rs 3000

Total expenditure: Rs 1,02,460

Though we tried our best to provide relief to the people living here, the situation seems to be getting worse with the recent depression around coastal Bengal that is causing incessant rain. Our timelines have been flooded with waterlogged streets of Kolkata for the last two days and we cannot imagine the situation in these areas of the Sunderbans.
We have begun preparations for our next drive already and urge you to support us in our endeavour.

We would also take this opportunity to thank Project One for coming forward and contributing to our cause.

To the lovely people who have been availing our services,

We are so glad to announce that we have been able to sustain our initiative of providing free meals to covid patients for 30 days! What began as a prompt and not-so-planned venture to ease out the difficulties of the patients and bring back a sense of community, evolved into something we had never imagined. We have been able to serve 4500+ meals during this period. We thank each one of you for putting your faith in us, coming forward and contributing, and spreading the word about our initiative.
However, with the reduced number of calls in the last one week and so many messages from recovered patients, it seems that the city and its people are slowly showing signs of healing. Nothing makes us happier to know that we could be there for you during your time of need.
To that end, we would like to inform you that our free meal initiative will not be functional anymore.
We hope to meet all of you in person, at The Chaiwala, soon!

Till then, stay safe and keep supporting us in our endeavours.

Do check out our Facebook and Instagram pages for our “Yaas Cyclone Relief” drives that we are carrying out in Midnapore and the Sunderbans. We have already carried out 2 drives and are preparing for the next.

Love,
The B**g Nanny

We tried our best to provide some relief by distributing the following supplies to 500+ people.

“We can do no great things;
only small things with great love.”

Ever since the second wave of covid and the lockdown, we have tried to provide respite to as many people as we can, in our very limited capacity. When Miss Taposhi Das, a covid patient who had been availing our services, called us up after the cyclone Yaas to tell us that she has a school (Sahajpath Foundation) comprising of the children living in the slums of Kalighat and Chetla and that, their homes had flooded due to the overflow of water from canal, we assured her that we would help in whatever way we could.
The children along with their families had been relocated to a nearby school in Chetla, but had been going without food for two days. We were able to provide rice, chicken and sweets to more than 50 of them who could later return to their homes once the water had receded.

We cannot do much, but we are trying our best to do whatever little we can to help everyone get through this difficult time.
We thank everyone who has been constantly supporting us in reaching out to the ones in need.

Yaas Cyclone Relief
by The B**g Nanny

When our country is already battling with the second wave of covid, the people of Bengal have been hit by yet another calamity, leading to loss of life and livelihood. The cyclone ‘Yaas’ has devastated several villages in Midnapore and the Sunderbans. While continuing our work of providing free meals to covid patients in Kolkata, we have also begun procuring relief materials for the cyclone affected people.
As of now, we have identified a few zones where we will carry out relief work, starting with East Midnapore this Sunday.
We urge you to come forward and consider contributing to our cause and help us stand by the ones who are in dire need of assistance.
Apart from donations, we are also accepting specific relief materials. Contact us to know more.
