The Kochi airport in Kerala suspended all flight operations till Saturday afternoon after an increase in the water level near the airport because of continuous rain and the opening of the gates of the dams in the Idukki water reservoir system. Flights are being diverted to other airports. Kerala, battered by heavy rain, flooding and landslides, is seeing its worst monsoon in almost a century in terms of its sheer devastating impact, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had said. Forty two people have died in the state since August 8. The Met department has warned of heavy rain with gusty winds in all the 14 districts of Kerala.

* The Tehri Dam on India’s Bhagirathi River, the main tributary of the Ganges, is the highest dam in India and one of the tallest in the worl and most controversial hydroelectric projects.
* It is a multi-purpose rock and earth-fill embankment dam on the Bhagirathi River near Tehri in Uttarakhand, India.
* It is the primary dam of the THDC India Ltd. and the Tehri hydroelectric complex.
* Phase 1 was completed in 2006, the Tehri Dam withholds a reservoir for irrigation, municipal water supply and the generation of 1,000 MW of hydroelectricity.
* The dam's 1,000 MW pumped-storage scheme is currently under construction
* Tehri is located 200 miles north east of Delhi, in the state of Uttaranchal. With a height of 260 meters (855 feet), the dam will be the fifth tallest in the world.
* Its reservoir will completely submerge Tehri Town and 40 villages, and partially submerge 72 villages.

Umngot River

* Umngot River is one of the most Clear River in a town Dawki in West Jaintia Hills district, Meghalaya, India.
* The water is so clear that when see from a distance, it appears as if the boat is floating in mid-air.
* Dawki serves as a busy trade route between India and Bangladesh where hundreds of trucks pass every day. It is one of the few road border crossings between India and Bangladesh.
* It is used mainly for coal transportation to Bangladesh. Some 500 trucks cross the border every day in peak season.
* The river is the natural boundary between Ri Pnar (of Jaintia Hills) with Hima Khyrim (of Khasi Hills) over which hangs a single span suspension bridge.
* Dawki Bridge, is a suspension bridge over the Umngot river. It was constructed in 1932 by the British.
* The Umngot itself is a prime fishing spot for fishermen from nearby areas.
* The town itself is a mere 95 km from Shillong and nearly 200 kilometers from Guwahati .
