These umbrella-shaped hangings are a unique combination with the chooda, which signifies happiness for the newlyweds and eternal love between the couple. The bride’s sisters and friends tie the kalire to her chooda. They are golden or silver in color. The significance is to provide good wishes to the bride and to remind her of her cousins and friends whom she is going to leave behind when she gets married. Also, the coconut-shape of the kalire is symbolic that she never runs out of food in the new home, while the metal symbolizes wealth and prosperity. The ritual is followed with the bride shaking her chooda and kalire worn hands on the heads of all the unmarried girls present. It is believed that if any part or leaf of the kalire falls on the head of any girl’s head, she will be the next one to get married...

The tradition of the engagement ring dates back many years. It was once believed that the fourth finger of the left hand contained the vena amoris (or vein of love) and that this vein connected directly to the heart. This tradition has endured and that is why today both engagement rings and wedding rings are placed on this particular finger. In this way then the wedded couple was believed to be “joined at the heart.” The circle was the symbol of eternity, with no beginning or end, not only to the Egyptians, but many other ancient cultures. The hole in the center of the ring also had significance. It wasn’t just considered a space, but rather a gateway, or door; leading to things and events both known and unknown. To give a woman a ring signifies never-ending and immortal love.

Wearing the choora signifies the status of a married woman. It is also a sign of fertility and prosperity. It is worn for the well being of the husband. The bride is not allowed to see the choora till the wedding because out of excitement, her own evil eye may bring misfortune. Therefore the bride's eyes are closed when the choora is put on by her relatives.

It is a common belief that the darker the color the mehndi leaves on the hands on a bride, the more will she be loved by her husband and mother-in-law. However, the significance of applying mehndi during weddings is not restricted just to sentiments and beliefs. Although these beliefs make the application of mehndi a much anticipated and charming tradition, the actual reason is of much deeper significance. Besides lending color to the hands, mehndi is a very powerful medicinal herb. Weddings are stressful, and often, the stress causes headaches and fevers. As the wedding day approaches, the excitement mixed with nervous anticipation can take its toll on the bride and groom. Application of mehndi can prevent too much stress because it cools the body and keeps the nerves from becoming tense. This is the reason why mehndi is applied on the hands and feet, which house nerve endings in the body.
