David is three years older than me. I have always tried to emulate him in everything I did. It seemed like I was a younger and better version of David, causing tension between us. For David, his little brother wasn't a playmate anymore but a competition. Our parents acted as the fuel to the fire with their constant comparison of us. That tore us further apart. We were very similar in our stubbornness and high-headedness. Neither one would back down from arguing, and our arguments often ended in fistfights. This uneasiness lasted throughout our teens until he left for college. The only way we had of knowing what was going on in others' life was via our parents. I started missing him, his presence around the house, our silly fights, and I realized he loves and understands me more than anyone else. This year David got enlisted in the marines, and I realized this would be one of the few chances we might have for an honest conversation. The prospect of not being able to convey my love and support to him scared me. So in his send-off party, I wanted to present something meaningful to him. I found out about Gift A Place, and they helped me customize an old memory of ours as kids when it was just David and me against the world. A few tears and swear words later, we were in a better place than before. We went to a nearby bar to celebrate a huge deal our company had acquired. There I met Mary, where she was waitressing for the night. We chatted for a few seconds while she served the drinks, and there was an instant connection between us. Somehow in the drunken chaos, I managed to get her number before we left. We used to talk for hours, and I realized that we shared similar sensibilities. Mary had a great sense of humor, and I really enjoyed our conversations. After three days of only talking on the phone, I finally asked her out. Within a week of our date, we moved in together, and it has been four years of fun since then. I proposed to her while we were on our vacation in Positano, Italy, and she said YES. I felt the happiest I've ever felt. We are hoping to get married by the end of the year.
