A pure and beautiful flower is born in the still waters of the pond underneath the mud, and, when the time comes, it emerges. It grows out of the water and straight toward the sky, opening its petals in the rays of warm sunlight, revealing its natural beauty. In sharing its fragrance with the world, it leaves the mud far behind. The flower exists as a part of its environment, and stands apart from it at the same time….

The John C. and Susan L. Huntington Photographic Archive of Buddhist and Asian Art contains nearly 300,000 original slides and photographs – photographic documentation of art and architecture throughout Asia. Countries covered in the collection include India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Thailand, Indonesia, Myanmar (Burma), China, and Japan. There is a story of a Sufi Master, who came to know from some people that his disciple had undergone a tragic life experience and was suffering in great distress. The Master clapped his hands delightfully declaring that this was “good news!” The people were shocked and inquired as to how this could be so. The Master answered – “As long as the world is rewarding you with the things you want, you will continue to revel in it. Only when you taste of rejection do you turn away and search somewhere else. Luckily, the only other place to search is within yourself. “
Buddha’s journey to enlightenment was unconventional. But we all know his story. Yashodhara’s story is the lesser known. But it is the route that many experience. Loss, pain, and grieving is often considered the most effective spiritual medicine - The strongest antidote to fuel the inward journey.
