Welcome to Sightsavers.
Did you know that India has the largest population of blind people in the world? Over 12 million* of our fellow countrymen live without sight, and every minute a child goes blind in India! The majority of blind people are found in the poorest parts of the country with little or no access to basic health facilities. Poverty is therefore both a cause and effect of blindness.
The sad fact is that 80 percent of this blindness could have been prevented if timely treatment was available! Yet our collective indifference has condemned them to a life filled with challenges and discrimination.
Sightsavers is a globally recognised development organisation working in India since 1966 to eliminate avoidable blindness and promote equality of opportunity for people with visual impairment and other disabilities.
We do this by:
a) Organising regular eye screening camps in the poorest areas of the country
b) Supporting sight restoration surgeries for people in need
c) Providing irreversibly blind children with education support, and adults with livelihood training
Through our work, we have been able to:
- Screen 52 million Indians for sight-threatening eye conditions
- Support 36 million patients with eye treatments
- Restore sight for 5 million people through surgery
Preventing blindness increases access to education, employment and prosperity, and enables greater participation in civil, social and political life. You can do your part in preventing blindness by:
a) Giving monthly to Sightsavers through ACH (Automated Clearing House). ACH is an electronic mode of fund transfer wherein a fixed amount (INR 650 or more) gets transferred from your bank account to another. It gets deducted from your account on a monthly basis. To activate ACH you have to sign an ACH mandate form along with a cancelled cheque which will be used to mandate your ACH.
b) Giving once to Sightsavers by drawing a cheque in favour of “Sightsavers” with a minimum donation of INR 7800 or more.
