DJs used to get booked with a mixtape.

One hour of music.
Your taste. Your selections.
Your argument for why you deserve the room.

Now they send an Instagram profile.

“What can I do with your Instagram?
I want to hear music.
I want to hear content.”

30 years in nightlife.
Assad Namazi has seen both eras.

He knows exactly which one
produced better DJs.

He grew up in Bangalore.

He ended up playing music
for billionaires in Mayfair.

Tables at £10,000 a night.
Champagne for the whole room.
Giorgio Armani at the front table.

And after the set —
one of Armani’s people walked up.

“Mr. Armani likes your music.
Here’s my card.”

No Instagram. No reels. No followers.
Just a kid who knew how to select
the right record at the right moment.

“I don’t have snaps or reels from that night.
I just have a random old flyer.”

That’s the whole story.
Not the glamour.
The work that got him in the room.
And the humility that kept him there.

The DJ selector framework.
Save this. You’ll need it.

Assad Namazi has been doing this for 30 years.
This is how he prepares every single set.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

01 — LISTEN
Beatport. Other DJ sets. New releases.
Listen to everything.

02 — SELECT
From 500 songs heard that week —
pick the ones that could work.

03 — THE LITMUS TEST
One question for every track:
“If I play this for the first time,
will people dance to it?”
If the answer isn’t yes — it’s out.

04 — THE IN-BETWEEN
“Everybody plays the big songs.
It’s the in-between songs —
the ones people don’t know —
that actually define a DJ.”

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

This is what separates
a good DJ from a great one.
Not the mixing.
Not the gear.
Not the following.

The selection.

He was 8 years old when he saw it for the first time.

A glass DJ console that looked like a cockpit.
Lights flashing. Two turntables.
An LED matrix on the dance floor.

And one question that changed everything:

“How is one sound blending into the other?
How is that even possible?”

30 years later — he’s still finding the answer.

Full episode drops this Sunday.

No algorithms. No shortcuts. Just dancefloors.

This one’s seen the scene evolve from the early days…
to international clubs…
to shaping what nightlife looks like today.

30 seconds. 4 clues. 1 guest.

There’s no union for DJs. So they built their own.
One fund. One rule. No undercutting — ever.

Rewinding back to the B.U.D days and the principles it was built on.

Bangalore’s bar scene over 40 years — from Kingfisher kegs to sipping tequila. The shift is real. 🌵🥃

Poll : Is tequila replacing whisky in nightlife ?

Funniest drink requests behind the bar:

🥭 Whisky with mango juice
🍋 Single malt with lime squeezed in

Avalon says they try to guide guests…

But if that’s how you like it — that’s how you’ll get it.

Bartenders have truly seen everything.

When an allegation is made,
silence can sometimes feel easier.

But silence can also become permanent.

He didn’t speak to prove a point.
He spoke to put his side on record.

Some bartenders serve drinks.

Avalon remembers them.

Sometimes even years later.

That’s not just memory — that’s hospitality.
