It’s been a while since our last Flower Fact Friday so I hope you like this one dedicated to those born in August.
Did you know that August actually has TWO birth flowers?
First up is the Gladiolus - tall, dramatic and impossible to miss. The name comes from the Latin “gladius” meaning “sword”, which makes sense when you see its long, sword-shaped leaves. Gladioli are also associated with strength, sincerity and remembrance.
Then we have the Poppy - they are delicate-looking but full of meaning and come in a huge array of colours. Poppies have long been linked with remembrance, but they can also symbolise peace and imagination.
So if you were born in August, you get two beautiful flowers to claim as your own.

Did you know that we offer basket arrangements as part of our gift range?
This display was sent recently to celebrate the beginning of maternity leave so we included pops of pink and blue.
It also features some fabulous “Big Blue” Eryngium which we are proud to have grown right here on the hillside in Leap 👏👏

This morning’s delivery was a little reminder that flowers really are for everyone.
This arrangement was sent from a daughter to her dad for a birthday celebration, and it made us realise how rarely we see men receiving flowers but we are here for it!

I’d like to spread a little kindness around the community that has been so kind in supporting my little business.
Next week is Loneliness Awareness Week and throughout the week, I'll be leaving mini bunches of flowers in public locations around West Cork, each with a hand-written note encouraging whoever finds them to spend time with someone who may be feeling lonely - whether that's a friend, neighbour or relative.
On a daily basis I get to see the joy that flowers bring to people - quite often I deliver to people living alone or going through a hard time and we end up having a good chat. This helped me to realise how important these interactions are and I’m hoping that if you happen to find one of the mini bunches that you’ll take it with you to visit someone and help brighten their day.

Hello everyone - my name is Amy and I’m the owner of Hillside Flowers.
There have been quite a few new followers to this page lately so I thought it would be a good time to re-introduce myself and tell you a little bit about what we offer.
I’ve been a florist for almost ten years now and started Hillside Flowers 2 years ago after moving to Leap from the South Wales valleys.
When I’m not arranging flowers you’ll find me walking my Giant and Mini Schnauzer in the woods or on one of our lovely local beaches.
I struggle to pick a favourite flower but if you really bent my arm I’d probably say Freesia as they have such a sweet fragrance and also come in an assortment of colours.
