How do you look after yourself when you look after others?

Time for those who care for others to care for themselves was the focus of this morning's session, organised by Donegal Volunteer Centre. I was chuffed to be asked to lead it.

After some lovely tea and scones we headed for a gentle stroll along the Swilly's stunning shoreline and reflected on our experience as volunteers, especially

the times we are grateful for
the times that stand out as we look back
the times we had to walk with those who were struggling
and the times we may have struggled ourselves,
and the times we saw something transformed emerge beyond that struggle
in others, and in ourselves.

We recognised the importance of regularly connecting, with ourselves, with nature, and with 'our tribe' - whoever that might be - to keep us keeping on.

With all the changes in how people relate to Church and religion, how do we go about taking care of our inner lives?

How do we create spaces together to connect with what actually going on for ourselves, and to connect with whatever it is that gives us energy and hope?

Where can you speak honestly about faith- the hope it can give, and the questions that it sometimes prompts?

It's a cliche to say it's a privilege to be part of someone's wedding day, but it so very true>

It's an honour to be trusted by a couple with their story . And to hear from them on ' Why marriage, and why now?'. Getting to create a ceremony that is right for a couple, and holding the space that allows them cement their commitment in front of all the people that really matter to them, is something I will never take for granted.

Getting to hang out in various stunning Donegal locations, is another perk!

So to all the couples who trusted me with their big day this year - a big thank you. Best wishes to you all as your married journey starts off, especially for your first married Christmas. May it be the first of many as a happily married couple.

Very exciting to receive this book in the post, and to see my name, along with many others* on the cover.

'Gather' traces the history and contemporary practice of women's 'circles'/ gatherings. Over 60 contributions speak to why they matter, and how they can be spaces of support, healing and lasting growth, and a chance to revisit some familiar stories from a women's point of view.

Published by it can be purchased at https://womancraftpublishing.com/product/gather-a-celebration-of-womens-circles/

And for those who might like to hear the piece I wrote that's in it, here's link to me reading it ( during Covid- hence the longer than normal hair!) https://www.patriciahiggins.ie/post/new-annunciations

'Women's circles'...

I am not sure that any of the groups of friends I am lucky enough to be part of - from school friends, to college friends, to friends from a volunteer programme in my twenties, the 'Mammies on the run' group that I met in parent and toddler group, and in more recent years the group of women I have met through sea-swimming/ dipping.. would think of themselves as 'a women's circle'. I am not sure that I would either to be honest.

So, it's funny to find myself published in a book that celebrates 'Women's Circles'.

What I can connect with is the title - 'Gather'. I love that. I have found the chance to gather with women in all these different groups, to have been such a source of strength, insight, support... and at times, some much needed belly laughs. All of them have been places to share stories - the ones that can make us laugh, and the ones that make us cry too. And it's out of a sense of what these gatherings of women can offer, in 'a world that so often seems so tilted towards men' that the piece I wrote that's included came.
