Some weddings just have a special atmosphere from the very start, and Elaine & Chris's day at was one of them.

The funny thing is, Elaine and I had been chatting most evenings for months before the wedding, so by the time I arrived that morning it felt more like catching up with a friend than meeting a client.

The girls were already in full party mode. Music blaring, glasses being filled and plenty of laughter. When I popped in to see Chris and the lads, they were just as relaxed and ready for the day.

The weather kept us guessing with that classic Irish misty rain, but we stuck to the plan and headed to the beautiful after the ceremony. We made use of the stunning interiors and even managed to sneak outside for a few portraits when the rain eased.

Back at the hotel, absolutely stole the show. As Elaine & Chris stepped onto the dance floor surrounded by family and friends, phone lights lit up the room and the atmosphere was electric. Within minutes the dance floor was packed and it stayed that way all night.

What a day. ❤️

Adam & Kate’s day at the Japanese Gardens in Tramore felt alive from beginning to end. Rain drifting through the gardens, laughter echoing across the decking, kids running through puddles, family tears one second and pure chaos the next.

That’s the stuff I love photographing.

Not just the big portraits.
Not just the “perfect” moments.

The real moments.

The quick looks.
The nervous smiles.
The dad grabbing his new son in law son by the neck laughing after the ceremony.

The atmosphere people feel but never fully see until years later.

What is photography if it cannot make you feel life in every image.

That’s what I try to give couples back.
A way to walk back through their wedding day and feel it all over again.

Adam & Kate, thank you for letting me be part of it ☘️

A misty spring day in County Waterford, hidden away inside the incredible Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens in Tramore

I had photographed here before, but every time you walk back into these gardens it feels like discovering them all over again.

Little winding paths.
Tiny bridges crossing streams.
Ponds tucked away between explosions of colour.
And late spring bringing the entire place to life.

The weather apps promised us dry weather all day.

The weather apps lied

Soft misty rain rolled in just before the ceremony, but honestly it only made the gardens feel even more magical.

Guests wrapped themselves under umbrellas, emotions started pouring out, and Adam & Kate spent the entire ceremony looking at each other with huge smiles and laughter from start to finish.

One of my favourite moments from the whole day was before Kate even left the house.

If you grow up in an Irish estate, you already know what happens when one of your own gets married…

The neighbours come out

Phones in the air.
Everyone waiting for a glimpse of the dress.
The “awh stop she looks gorgeous” reactions.

Pure Irish tradition.

And Kate’s dad Ger?
The proudest man in Waterford that morning.

Later on we embraced the rain properly and headed deeper into the gardens for portraits.

Most couples run from weather like this.

Kate & Adam leaned into it completely.

Umbrellas down.
Laughing through the mist.
Walking the streams and pathways while the colours of the gardens exploded around them.

Ireland really is magic when couples trust the moment

God I love Ireland and the funny little traditions we have. 🇮🇪
I am selecting the images to be edited this morning, and came to these and just had to share because everyone can relate to this scene.

I grew up in an estate myself, so the second I arrived that morning I already knew what was coming.

When one of your own is getting married, the whole neighbourhood comes out for a look see. They have to. Phones out. Dressing gowns barely changed. Everyone waiting to see the dress, see the flowers, and say the “ah here… she looks unreal.”

Even though everyone was spread around the place, I gently said:
“Lads, move in closer to the front door there so ye can get a proper look at Kate.”

And they did.

Because this isn’t just a wedding morning. This is someone they watched growing up. They’ve seen Kate her whole life. No chance they were missing this moment.

But what really got me sitting editing this morning was Ger’s face.

Look at the pride in him walking his daughter out that front door. Chest out. Smiling from ear to ear. Trying to hold it together while also looking like the happiest man in Ireland.

These are the little moments I love photographing.

Not just the big dramatic portraits or the epic locations… but the tiny bits of Irish life we all instantly recognise the second we see them.

On a quiet spring morning in East Cork, people slowly wandered into St Mary’s Church in Ladysbridge for 10am Mass, not knowing they were about to witness something they would remember long after they left.

Christopher and Estela had travelled from America to this little 200 year old church because Christopher’s great-grandmother had once been baptised there. That one family connection brought them all the way back to Ireland to renew their vows after thirty years of marriage.

Check out their blog here, https://jodphotography.ie/christopher-estelas-quiet-renewal-of-vows-in-east-cork-st-marys-church-ladysbridge/

Before Mass began, the two of them sat quietly together saying a full rosary while strangers slowly filled the pews around them.

The church was silent apart from the odd cough left over from winter echoing softly every now and then.

Then during Mass, the priest called them up to the altar.

No big production.
No performance.
Just two people standing together once again promising to keep loving each other the same way they already had for the last thirty years.

At one point Estela stood up and spoke about her husband. She thanked God for their life together before turning toward Christopher sitting quietly in the front pew listening to every word she said.

I remember one woman standing beside me near the back of the church wiping tears from her eyes while Estela spoke. When I looked over she smiled at me for a second as if to say,
“isn’t this something?

Later that morning we walked the shoreline near Garryvoe together. Watching Christopher and Estela laugh, climb rocks and look at one another so naturally honestly just made me smile the whole day.

Their hands had aged together over thirty years of marriage, yet the gentleness between them still felt young.

And I suppose that’s what photography really is to me.

Life moves fast.
Moments pass quietly.
Behind the camera I’m simply trying to notice them before they disappear.

The small glances.
The silence between words.
The way somebody reaches for another person’s hand without even thinking.

Because one day those little moments become the story.

Christopher & Estela ❤️

What a day down in the Kingdom for the wedding of Pataire & John

A Cork man deep in Kerry territory… and I was reminded of it a few times throughout the day but honestly it only added to the craic.

My morning started at Pataire’s family home where the welcome was unbelievably warm from the second I walked in the door. The house was full of laughter, excitement, and the kind of energy that instantly tells you it’s going to be a brilliant wedding day.

The morning itself started bright and sunny, but as we made our way towards Mary Immaculate Church, Loher in Waterville, the weather decided to throw a few Kerry showers at us. At first it looked like they were only passing through… but they had notions of hanging around for a while.

Even after the ceremony we still planned to head to the pier for portraits, and fair play to Pataire & John because despite the rain they were straight away like “yea let’s do it anyway.” And somehow, someone up above must have been looking after us because the rain stopped just as we arrived and gave us about 20 perfect minutes to create some really fun and beautiful portraits together.

Then it was back to where 200 odd guests were waiting in flying form to welcome the newlyweds. The energy levels jumped up a few notches from there . The sun came back out, the pints were flowing, everyone was buzzing, and the atmosphere was unreal from start to finish.

And the guests… my god some craic altogether. Especially the mad bunch of nurses who laughed and partied their way through the entire day. Ye were brilliant.
Once the dance floor opened, ye absolutely tore into it, roared on by family and friends while brought the house down all night long
Huge thanks as well to the legend for covering the morning over at John’s house for me. Absolute gentleman.

I asked ChatGPT something recently after feeding it thousands of my wedding photos over time…

“How would you describe me as a photographer?”

Not my camera.
Not my editing.
Me.

Its answer honestly stopped me for a second.

It said my images feel alive.

That the people in my photos don’t look like they’re posing for a wedding photographer…
they look like they’re fully inside their wedding day.

Laughing uncontrollably.
Hugging too tight.
Shouting across rooms.
Crying one second and roaring laughing the next.

And the strange thing is…
the AI noticed something I never really thought about myself.

It said my couples trust me.

Not just the bride and groom either.
The guests too.

People look comfortable around me.
Relaxed.
Open.
Like they’ve forgotten there’s even a camera in the room.

And honestly, that probably means more to me than perfectly posed photos ever could.

Because anybody can learn camera settings now.
Anybody can buy presets.
Anybody can copy trends.

But making people feel comfortable?
Making nervous couples relax?
Getting real laughter instead of “photographer laughter”?

That part is human.

The truth is, I don’t want weddings to feel like photoshoots.
I want them to feel like brilliant slightly chaotic emotional days surrounded by people you love…
and I just happen to be there in the middle of it all documenting it honestly.

Mad world really.
An Irish wedding photographer getting personality feedback from artificial intelligence at 1am over a cup of tea.

But maybe it saw something I was too close to notice myself.
