Joe and Angela’s marriage is on the rocks, with endless bickering and a complete lack of intimacy. Tensions boil over one evening when Angela invites their new neighbours Piña and Hawk over for dinner. Despite Joe’s open hostility and Angela’s awkward hosting efforts, their curiosity is ultimately piqued as Piña and Hawk open up about their non-traditional marriage. The night takes a dramatic turn with an unexpected offer from the visitors - one that will test the limits of Joe and Angela’s shaky marriage.

Following sold out performances last year Irish National Opera is delighted to tour its critically acclaimed production, The Bartered Bride to a host of new venues across Ireland.

Set in a busy Czech village bound by tradition and tangled in secrets, The Bartered Bride is a fast-paced comic opera where two young lovers attempt to rewrite the rules. To be together, they need to outwit a meddling matchmaker, sidestep an unwanted marriage contract and survive the arrival of a traveling circus.

At the heart of the story is Irish soprano Amy Ní Fhearraigh as Mařenka, a spirited young woman determined to marry for love but promised to a wealthy landowner’s son. Russian-Ukrainian tenor Egor Zhuravskii sings her devoted, but not entirely honest lover, Jeník.

Smetana’s melodic score bursts with infectious folk rhythms, dazzling duets and the vibrant energy of its famous overture and dances. INO’s energetic production brings a fresh musical perspective, with conductor Richard Peirson leading his own dynamic new arrangement of Smetana’s beloved score.

The Bartered Bride is sung in English with English surtitles.

Internationally renowned composer Matthew Nolan, accompanied by musicians Seán Mac Erlaine, Lisa Dowdall and Kilkenny native Damien Lennon, present a specially-commissioned live score for Nietzchka Keene’s stark, stunning debut feature The Juniper Tree.

Loosely based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale of the same name. The Juniper Tree stars Björk in her first feature-film performance and premiered to glowing reviews at the Sundance Film Festival in 1991. Set in medieval Iceland, it follows Margit, played by Björk in a riveting performance, and her older sister Katla as they flee for safety after their mother is burned to death for witchcraft. Finding shelter with Johan and his resentful young son, Jonas, the sisters form an improvised family unit soon strained by Katla’s burgeoning sorcery.

Shot entirely on location in Iceland’s extraordinary landscapes in spectacular black and white by Randy Sellars, the film is richly atmospheric: evocative of Carl Theodor Dreyer’s Day of Wrath and Ingmar Bergman’s The Virgin Spring, and filled with indelible, waking-dream sequences. A potent allegory for misogyny and its attendant tragedies, The Juniper Tree is a major rediscovery for art-house audiences.
Nolan brings his acclaimed approach to live film scoring to this remarkable work, after previous commissions for Dublin City Council Bram Stoker Festival and Kilkenny Arts Festival.
