We are delighted to host artist Owen Maseko for an informal artist talk in the gallery to mark the completion of his exhibition Sibathontisele / Let’s drip on them / Braon ar bhraon orthu 💙

We would love you to join us with Owen in the bar afterwards to continue the conversation. The suite of paintings in the exhibition (or the originals that they are copies of) led to Owen to be charged with undermining the authority of President Robert Mugabe and causing offence to persons of a particular race or religion. The Mugabe regime later changed the charges to a more serious offence of falsifying information to incite public violence, carrying a possible twenty-year prison sentence. The case was taken to the Supreme Court, who decided to drop charges in 2015. However, the Supreme Court permanently banned the exhibition from being shown anywhere in Zimbabwe or from travelling out of the country. A remade version of the exhibition has since been shown in South Africa and Kenya, and now Ireland.

In the days preceding the event, Owen will be building on the work in the gallery, completing it with hand-painted text elements. We hope you can join us to for this special event to mark the occasion.

Sibathontisele / Let’s drip on them / Braon ar bhraon orthuseeks to engage the traumatic memory of the Gukurahundi, the four-year genocidal targeting of Ndebele people by Zimbabwean government forces. Maseko’s painted work and accompanying text in isiNdebele communicate a cultural and national history of minoritisation and the affective politics of “dissidence.” Brought into the Irish context, Maseko’s work illuminates the potency of the native tongue against cultural and linguistic imperialism: the power of the political imaginary and precision of memory that one’s own language affords, as well as the transnational possibilities for solidarity.

“It makes a play”

Sorcha Cusack, Anna Healy, Ruth McCabe and Deirdre Monoghan sit together in a garden — not unlike the one in Escaped Alone — and offer a glimpse into the heart of this thought-provoking production.

A play about friendship, memory, mortality… and the rising sense that something is cracking underneath it all.

Directed by Annabelle Comyn. Escaped Alone is intimate and vast. Domestic and apocalyptic. Funny, sharp, and quietly devastating.

In a career spanning over six decades, playwright Caryl Churchill has completely transformed the art of playwriting, and she continues to reinvent the genre with each new creation.

𝘽𝙊𝘿𝙔 𝘽𝙀 𝙉𝙊 𝙁𝙄𝙍𝙀𝙒𝙊𝙊𝘿 - Inspired by a popular Nigerian proverb, this highlights the fragile nature of the human body, emphasizing that it requires care, rest, and nourishment to function fully. It serves as a reminder of the importance of balance and self-care in our lives.

Tobi Balogun and Tobi Omoteso are multi-talented artists who wear many hats, from dancers to cultural activists to community leaders. Their contributions to various aspects of the Black community in Ireland have been monumental.

Both Tobis have a unique ability to merge their art with activism, which has profoundly impacted both the dance scene and broader Black and Irish culture. Their work is grounded in a deep-rooted connection to Nigerian traditions, particularly Yoruba culture.

In addition, Tobi Balogun is a sustainability-focused fashion designer, blending eco-conscious values with creative expression.

Tobi Omoteso is also a chef and DJ, using food and sound as powerful cultural connectors. His practice supports smoother integration for new communities through events that fuse nourishment, performance, and belonging.
