Volvo Ambassadors Rachael Blackmore, horse-racing legend and winner of both the Grand National and Cheltenham Gold Cup, who this week announced her retirement, alongside James Ryan, newly announced Lions squad member, three time six Nations Champion and Grand Slam winner, were 'riding the crest of a wave' today to help launch the 10th Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta. Ireland's largest sailing event, which takes place from Thursday, July 10th to Sunday, July 13th 2025, is now a major international sailing event, with everything from Olympic and world-class professionals to weekend sailors and their craft travelling from as far afield as the U.S.A to participate.

No strangers to high performance sports and adventure themselves both Rachael and James embraced the aquatic charms of Dublin Bay onboard "Terra Nova" expertly skippered by Peter Bowring to help officially launch the event, which will see up to 70 different yacht clubs around the globe represented, reflecting the Regatta's ever growing international profile.

Savings of up to 17% are available before midnight tonight (Wednesday, April 30th), to enter Ireland's largest sailing event this year, the 2025 Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta on Dublin Bay.

With over 200 entries received so far for the July 10-13 fest, organisers are reported 'pleased' with the take-up to date across the competing handicap and One Design classes.

The last VDLR edition in 2023 comprised over 300 sailing races across 30 classes and 2,500 competitors ranging from Olympic and world-class professionals to weekend sailors drawn from Ireland and overseas and the 2025 fleet is starting to look like it will be a repeat performance.

The first race of this year’s Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta will be a mass start fixed mark race on the Irish capital's waters.

Titled the Bay Race, it will start close to the piers and, weather permitting, offer several course options throughout Dublin Bay and Killiney Bay.

Dublin Bay's C-shape is approximately 10 kilometres wide at its base and 7 kilometres long from Howth Head to Dalkey Island, allowing plenty of room for an expected 300-boat fleet at the four-day event.

Entries are already coming in for the 2025 edition of the Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta, and our early bird incentive will see all paid entries received by December 31st 2024 entered into a draw to win their entry fee back.

The regatta team are hard at work, planning for another great event and introducing some innovations to keep the offering fresh and relevant. Included in these are the Bay Race, the regatta opener on Thursday, which will see most boats start off the same line, a performance division in the non-Spinnaker fleet and an introductory cruiser class.

Also, in a new innovation for 2025, we have appointed a visitor's co-ordinator. Kate Fogarty will assist with accommodation and travel needs of visitors to Dun Laoghaire. A wild day on the water, but I think everyone is glad they went out for a look!

"The first day of the Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta saw the cancellation of nearly all racing due to strong winds. Although around 400 boats and 2,000 sailors went to sea, the organisers had to cancel racing due to the gale force winds before the first warning signals."

With the top three boats from 2019 all competing again, the outcome of this contest depends mainly on what conditions will prevail. Six days out, it looks like the Bay will serve strong to medium-strength southerly breezes, which could upset the pecking order in the regatta's most significant class.
