📚 "Make Me Well" by Xand van Tulleken, an English doctor, is a book like no other.
“A Quest to Understand the Confusing World of Wellness”
Everything you think you know about the wellness industry, and everything we think we see on social media, is addressed in this book.
The author, a medical doctor, takes a diligent look at the products we hear about everywhere: multivitamins, NAD/NMN, collagen, supplements (vitamin D, menopause), wearable tech, personalised nutrition, diet apps, testosterone. The book also looks at data, research, clinical trials and the medical journals behind them … and what we are told (or not) to make them appealing and easy to be sold …
And then there is the marketing. How many billions (yes, billions!) are invested every year? Who is behind these campaigns? How are they constructed to sell almost anything to almost everyone? And, I dare say, how little interest or care there is in whether these products actually work, or what they do to our bodies.
I'm keeping it general on purpose, because I don't want to spoil the reading.
It is not an ordinary book, nor an easy read, but it is definitely worth it. It is funny, real and authentic, and it describes the author's interviews with medical professionals (from reputable medical universities) and influencers about what so many of us are searching for: ways, or "hacks", to live longer and healthier. Whether we will… remains to be proven in the years to come.
This book changed what I thought I knew, and it opened my eyes to many, if not all 🙈, of the products the wellness industry is selling right now. I think it will change your views too. 💬
If you read it or intend to … I'd love to hear your thoughts.
