How to Know It’s Time to Replace Your Silk Pillowcase

This is a question I get asked all the time. How long your silk pillowcase lasts depends on how you take care of it and how often you use it.
If you notice any of the following, it might be time for a new one:

🌸 The silk has lost its sheen and feels slightly rough to the touch.
🌸 The colour has faded or looks patchy in areas that get the most contact.
🌸 Tiny pulls, thinning fabric, or seams beginning to give way.
🌸 If you use your pillowcase every day for roughly 18 mnoths then it would be a good idea to replace.

The beautiful Irene — the inspiration behind the Irene Cape.
So much of my work is shaped by the brides I meet along the way. Each one brings her own sense of style and beauty. When a bride inspires a design I like to name it after them so I can remember our journey together.

I like to use silk for my veils because it has such a beautiful, soft handle and it drapes really well. It moves naturally and catches the light in a way that other fabrics don’t.

It’s also much stronger than it looks. If you do happen to snag it, the threads can usually be pulled back into place — which is one of the reasons I love working with it.

When you’re storing your silk pieces — whether it’s a pillowcase, scarf or veil — a little touch of lavender can make all the difference. I grow lavendar in my garden so that each September I can make up lavendar bags to store with all of my silk fabrics. Here are a few reasons why its always a good idea to keep lavendar need natural fabrics especially silks.

Natural protection: Lavender helps keep moths and other insects away without the need for harsh chemicals.
Gentle fragrance: It leaves a light, calming scent that keeps your silks feeling fresh, not perfumed.
Moisture control: Dried lavender can help absorb small amounts of humidity, which silk is sensitive to.

If you place a small lavender bag in your storage box or drawer with your silk or any natural fabric it will help keep the moths away and your silk beautiful until the next wear.

Why I Always Use a Delicates Bag for Silk

When you’re washing silk — whether it’s a pillowcase, scrunchie, or blouse — it’s worth taking a minute to protect it properly. A delicates bag stops the fabric from catching or getting tangled, which helps it keep its shape and shine.

If you don’t have one, a clean cotton pillowcase works just as well. Just pop your silk inside and tie a loose knot at the top.

A few small steps like this help your silk stay soft and beautiful for years.

✨ Lace-Capped Veil ✨

There’s something timeless about a lace-capped veil — soft and romantic. I love using French Chantilly lace for these pieces; it has such a delicate, intricate weave that frames the face beautifully.

♻️ Sustainability in Bridal Design

One of my favourite parts of what I do is when someone brings me a preloved wedding dress to redesign and make their own. ✨
It could be a family heirloom, a dress with history, or simply a gown waiting for a second story — and there’s something incredibly special about giving it new life.

Being sustainable in the bridal world isn’t just about fabrics or fashion — it’s about honouring craftsmanship, reducing waste, and keeping memories alive.

If you’re planning to store your dress for future generations (or maybe to redesign later), here are a few tips to help keep it pristine:
👗 Have it professionally cleaned soon after your wedding to remove invisible stains that can darken over time.
🌿 Store it in acid-free tissue paper and a breathable cotton garment bag — never in plastic, as it traps moisture.
☁️ Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause silk and lace to yellow.
🪡 Handle with clean hands and avoid hanging heavy gowns by their straps — instead, lay them flat or use padded hangers for lighter dresses.

A wedding dress carries more than fabric — it holds love, memories, and the promise of stories still to come. 💕

✨ “I feel so lucky to have found Jill at Wilde by Design.” ✨

I wanted to rent a veil for my wedding, and Jill’s rental service was seamless from start to finish.
The veil itself, made from the most beautiful silk, was delicate, elegant, and even better than I had imagined.
It complemented my dress perfectly, and so many guests commented on how stunning it was.

Jill is incredibly skilled, and her thoughtful approach made the whole experience a joy. ❤️

✨ Exciting things are happening behind the scenes at Wilde by Design ✨

I’m in the process of refreshing my studio and working on some beautiful new projects — but before the new pieces arrive, I need to make a little space.

Over the next while, I’ll be posting a small collection of sample pieces for sale — one-off designs that have featured in fittings, shoots, and showcases. Each one has its own story and a little piece of the creative journey behind it.

Keep an eye here on social — I’ll be sharing details soon!
